Manipur – Stone-Pelting Between Tribal Groups Triggers Curfew in Ukhrul
Manipur – Fresh tensions erupted in Manipur’s Ukhrul district on Sunday evening after two tribal groups clashed in the Litan area, leading authorities to impose strict prohibitory measures to prevent further violence.

Prohibitory Orders Imposed to Restore Calm
The district administration moved swiftly after reports of intense stone-pelting between members of the Kuki-Zo and Naga communities surfaced. Ukhrul District Magistrate Asish Das issued orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), citing concerns over a potential breakdown of public order and communal harmony.
Under the directive, residents have been barred from stepping outside their homes, and any activity that could disrupt peace has been strictly prohibited. Officials said the decision was taken as a preventive step to avoid escalation and ensure the safety of civilians.
Security Forces Deployed in Sensitive Areas
In view of the fragile situation, the administration has called in additional security support. Army units and paramilitary forces have been requisitioned and deployed in and around Litan to maintain law and order. Patrols have been intensified, and key locations are being monitored closely to prevent further confrontation.
Authorities indicated that the deployment is precautionary and aimed at deterring any fresh incidents of violence. Security personnel have also been tasked with engaging local leaders to defuse tensions and encourage dialogue.
Alleged Assault Sparked Fresh Tensions
According to local sources, the unrest was triggered by an alleged assault on a member of the Tangkhul community late Saturday night. The incident reportedly involved a group of Kuki-Zo individuals, though officials have not released detailed information about the case.
The allegation quickly fueled anger among residents in several Naga villages across the district. Community members have demanded prompt action against those responsible, calling for accountability and justice.
While police have begun preliminary inquiries into the reported assault, authorities have urged residents not to spread unverified information that could inflame the situation further.
Situation Remains Sensitive in Naga-Majority District
Ukhrul, a district with a predominantly Naga population, has experienced heightened tension since the weekend. Residents described the atmosphere as strained, with many choosing to remain indoors following the imposition of restrictions.
Local leaders have appealed for restraint and emphasized the importance of maintaining communal harmony. Civil society groups are also said to be in touch with district officials in an effort to prevent the situation from spiraling.
Officials have not confirmed any serious injuries resulting from Sunday’s stone-pelting but acknowledged that the confrontation had created anxiety among villagers. Medical teams and emergency services have been placed on standby as a precaution.
Administration Appeals for Cooperation
District authorities have urged all communities to cooperate with security forces and abide by the prohibitory orders until the situation stabilizes. The administration has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property while ensuring that any criminal acts are addressed in accordance with the law.
Senior officials said the restrictions would remain in place until a thorough assessment indicates that the threat to public order has subsided. Meanwhile, investigations into the alleged assault are ongoing.
For now, Ukhrul remains under tight security as efforts continue to restore calm and prevent further unrest in the sensitive hill district.
