Maharashtra – Sunetra Pawar to Assume Deputy CM Office Today

Maharashtra – Sunetra Pawar is set to formally assume office as Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister on Tuesday, marking a significant transition in the state’s political leadership following the recent death of senior Nationalist Congress Party leader Ajit Pawar.

Her first official engagements of the day will include visits to Mumbai’s Siddhivinayak Temple and Chaityabhoomi in Dadar, where she will pay tribute to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. Party leaders said the visits reflect both a personal and symbolic start to her new responsibilities.

Formal Assumption of Office

Although Sunetra Pawar was sworn in as Deputy Chief Minister on January 31, days after the tragic accident that claimed her husband’s life, Tuesday will mark her formal assumption of charge. According to a senior Nationalist Congress Party office-bearer, she will begin overseeing her duties immediately after completing her morning visits.

She is expected to join senior NCP leaders, including national working president Praful Patel and Sunil Tatkare, during the day’s engagements. Later in the afternoon, she will attend a scheduled state cabinet meeting, her first in the role as Deputy Chief Minister.

Party insiders indicated that she has been assigned the same departments previously overseen by Ajit Pawar, ensuring continuity in governance. She has also moved into ‘Devgiri,’ the official Malabar Hill residence that had been her husband’s preferred bungalow during his tenure.

Sudden Loss Shaped Political Shift

The leadership change follows the fatal plane crash on January 28 that claimed Ajit Pawar’s life. He was travelling from Mumbai to Baramati in Pune district in the early hours of the day to participate in a Zilla Parishad election campaign when the private aircraft crashed near the airport.

The accident resulted in the death of all five people on board. Along with Ajit Pawar, those who lost their lives included his personal security officer Vidip Jadhav, pilot-in-command Captain Sumit Kapur, first officer Captain Shambhavi Pathak, and flight attendant Pinky Mali. The aircraft was reportedly owned by a Delhi-based company.

The incident sent shockwaves through Maharashtra’s political circles, prompting an outpouring of condolences from leaders across party lines. Ajit Pawar had long been a prominent figure in state politics and held several key portfolios over the years.

Party Leadership Signals Continuity

Senior NCP figures have described Sunetra Pawar’s appointment as a move aimed at maintaining administrative stability during a period of grief and transition. Her swearing-in on January 31 came within days of the accident, underscoring the urgency to keep the state’s executive functioning uninterrupted.

A party official confirmed that she will participate in her first cabinet meeting later on Tuesday, where routine administrative matters are expected to be discussed. No major policy announcements have been indicated for the session.

Observers note that her appointment ensures that the departments previously managed by Ajit Pawar continue under familiar oversight. While Sunetra Pawar has maintained a relatively low public profile in the past, party leaders say she has been closely associated with organizational matters and constituency-level activities.

Public and Political Attention

The developments have drawn considerable attention across Maharashtra, particularly in Baramati, a constituency closely associated with the Pawar family. Supporters gathered in recent days to express solidarity and pay tribute to the late leader.

As she steps into the role, Sunetra Pawar faces the dual challenge of carrying forward administrative responsibilities while navigating a period marked by personal loss. Political observers believe her early engagements and participation in cabinet proceedings will set the tone for the next phase of governance.

For now, Tuesday’s formal assumption of office represents both continuity and change within Maharashtra’s political landscape.
