Maharashtra: Residents in Thane blame TMC for the death of a biker who fell into a manhole and was run over by a speeding truck
Maharashtra: Early on Monday, a motorcyclist in Thane, Maharashtra, was killed by a speeding vehicle when his foot became lodged in a manhole and he fell into the road. There was apparently poor visibility when the accident happened close to Kalwa Hospital.

An NDTV story claims that the victim slid when his foot became stuck in the sewer because he was blind to the open manhole in the dark. According to investigators, he was instantly killed when a fast vehicle drove over him a short while later.
Due to the manhole’s location considerably below road level and the surrounding deep pit, two-wheelers are at risk. Locals have voiced their ire, claiming that the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has failed to solve these important road safety concerns in spite of several incidents involving cyclists and pedestrians.
In a different incidence, a high-tension electrical wire that ran across a rooftop in Achheja Buzurg village, Greater Noida, badly burnt 13-year-old Zara Khan of Delhi, resulting in the amputation of her hand and toes.
She was on a visit to her maternal uncle’s house on April 2 when she unintentionally touched the live wire while standing on a nearby rooftop. In order to preserve her life, physicians amputated her right hand and two toes when she was taken to the hospital.
No action was taken despite her family’s repeated requests to the electrical department to relocate or remove the hazardous power line. Police have now filed a case claiming carelessness against unnamed energy company personnel, eight months after Mohammed, her uncle, made a written complaint. Munendra Singh, Kotwali’s supervisor, said that whenever the inquiry yields further information, additional action would be taken.
