LPG – Rising Cylinder Prices Trigger Worry Among Households in Himachal Pradesh
LPG- Concerns are growing among residents in Himachal Pradesh after a fresh increase in the price of LPG cylinders, with many families saying the change is adding further strain to already tight household budgets. The rise in the cost of domestic and commercial gas cylinders is being felt across communities, particularly among daily wage earners and small business owners who rely heavily on LPG for everyday activities.

Price increase raises concern among local residents
Several residents say the latest price revision has made it harder for families to manage essential expenses. For many households, LPG remains the primary cooking fuel, and any increase in its cost directly affects monthly spending.
Local labourer Shabbir Ahmed explained that the increase has placed additional financial pressure on people whose income has remained largely unchanged for years. According to him, a domestic cylinder delivered to a household now costs around Rs 1,015 when delivery charges are included.
He said domestic LPG cylinders have become roughly Rs 60 more expensive, while commercial cylinders have risen by about Rs 125. For workers involved in delivering cylinders, the situation is also challenging because labour payments have not kept pace with rising prices.
Ahmed noted that delivery workers often travel several kilometres to supply cylinders, yet their earnings have remained almost the same for the past four to six years. At the same time, everyday items have become significantly more expensive. He pointed out that cooking oil, which earlier cost around Rs 55 per bottle, now sells for nearly Rs 200 in some places.
He added that while costs are increasing across sectors, wages for labourers have remained largely unchanged. According to him, the situation is making it difficult for workers to support their families, and authorities should consider the challenges faced by low-income earners.
Impact expected on farmers, workers and small businesses
Another resident, Ruplal, said the LPG price rise may eventually push up the cost of other goods and services as well. Since fuel and gas are used in several aspects of daily life, any increase in their price can influence transportation costs, food preparation, and small-scale business operations.
Ruplal explained that households today depend heavily on gas for cooking and vehicles for transportation. When fuel-related costs increase, the effect often spreads across multiple sectors of the economy.
He also expressed concern about the financial condition of many families in Himachal Pradesh, noting that income opportunities are limited in several regions. According to him, farmers, labourers and economically weaker households are likely to feel the impact more strongly than others.
Ruplal said the state has already been facing financial challenges and employment opportunities are not always consistent. In such circumstances, rising prices make it increasingly difficult for ordinary people to manage daily expenses.
Businesses dependent on commercial cylinders also affected
Apart from households, the price increase is also expected to influence small businesses that rely on commercial LPG cylinders. Hotels, roadside eateries and food stalls are among the sectors that depend on commercial gas for cooking and daily operations.
Business owners say higher gas prices may increase operating costs, which could eventually affect food prices or profit margins. Some residents believe the situation may require policy attention if prices continue to rise.
Many locals have urged authorities to monitor the situation and consider measures that could help reduce the burden on lower-income groups and small businesses.
While LPG remains a key source of cooking fuel across India, residents in Himachal Pradesh say stable prices and supportive policies are important to ensure that essential energy resources remain affordable for ordinary households.
