LPG – Opposition Questions Government As Commercial Gas Shortage Hits Businesses
LPG – Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi amid rising concern over the shortage of commercial LPG cylinders in several parts of the country. Gandhi claimed that while the prime minister has urged citizens not to panic, the government itself appears unsettled due to other issues.

The remarks came after opposition members staged a protest within the Parliament complex, demanding clarity from the government on the reported disruption in commercial LPG supply that has begun affecting restaurants, caterers and other food businesses.
Parliament Protest Over LPG Availability
Several opposition MPs, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, gathered near the Makar Dwar entrance of Parliament to demonstrate against what they described as inadequate communication from the government regarding the gas supply situation. Members from different opposition parties such as the Congress, DMK, TMC and Samajwadi Party joined the protest.
During the demonstration, lawmakers raised slogans directed at the government while calling for accountability on the LPG shortage issue. Some women MPs also staged a symbolic protest by sitting beside a mock brick cooking stove, highlighting how cooking gas shortages could impact kitchens across the country.
Following the protest, Gandhi addressed reporters and reiterated his criticism of the prime minister. He suggested that while the government was asking citizens to remain calm, the leadership itself appeared worried for reasons unrelated to the fuel supply situation.
Gandhi also referred to international developments and legal matters involving business groups, alleging that these issues were contributing to the government’s discomfort.
Demand for Parliamentary Discussion
Opposition leaders have also been pressing the government to allow a detailed discussion in Parliament regarding the ongoing tensions in West Asia and their possible effects on India’s energy supply chain.
According to opposition MPs, developments in the region could influence global fuel logistics and pricing, which may indirectly affect domestic availability of commercial LPG used by businesses. They argue that Parliament should debate the issue to ensure transparency and preparedness.
The demand for discussion has been raised repeatedly during the current session, with opposition leaders calling on the government to explain its strategy for managing any potential energy disruptions.
Government Urges Public Not to Panic
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday addressed the situation and appealed to citizens not to panic about fuel availability. He assured the public that the government is closely monitoring developments and that steps are being taken to safeguard national interests.
The government has emphasised that household cooking gas supply remains a priority and that domestic consumers will continue to receive LPG cylinders without disruption.
Officials and oil companies have also issued statements reassuring the public that the distribution system for household LPG remains stable despite the challenges affecting commercial supply.
Impact on Restaurants and Small Businesses
The shortage of commercial LPG cylinders has begun affecting kitchens across the country, particularly in the hospitality sector. Restaurants, street food vendors and catering services rely heavily on commercial gas cylinders for daily cooking operations.
With supply becoming uncertain in some areas, many businesses are exploring temporary alternatives such as induction cooktops, microwaves, firewood stoves and solar-based solutions.
Industry representatives say these alternatives are not always practical for large-scale cooking, but businesses are using them to keep operations running while awaiting improved LPG supply.
In major cities, including the national capital Delhi, several restaurants have reported that their current gas stock may last only a day or two. Owners fear that continued supply disruptions could lead to temporary closures and financial stress, particularly for smaller establishments.
Restaurant associations say many eateries are trying to manage the situation through careful rationing of available cylinders while coordinating with distributors to secure additional supply.
Authorities Continue Monitoring Situation
Government officials maintain that domestic LPG availability for households remains secure. Oil marketing companies are also working to streamline supply channels and address shortages affecting commercial users.
Authorities are continuing to monitor global energy developments closely, especially as geopolitical tensions in West Asia raise concerns about fuel transportation routes and supply chains.
Industry stakeholders have expressed hope that supply will stabilise soon, allowing businesses to resume normal operations without further disruption.
