Restrictions Announced to Prevent Escalation

The district administration invoked Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita across Litan and surrounding localities, citing concerns over a possible breakdown of peace. In an official communication, District Magistrate Asish Das stated that the decision was taken in view of apprehensions about public order and safety.

The order restricts public gatherings and movement that could aggravate the situation. Officials said the measures are preventive in nature and will remain in place until the administration is satisfied that normalcy has been restored.

Security Forces Deployed as Precaution

Local reports indicated that the district authorities sought assistance from the Army and paramilitary forces to strengthen security in the affected areas. The deployment is intended to deter further unrest and ensure that no fresh incidents occur.

Senior officials are understood to be monitoring developments closely. Additional security personnel have been stationed at sensitive points to prevent any confrontation between groups. While no official confirmation of large-scale violence has been issued, the administration appears to be taking no chances amid rising tensions.

Alleged Assault Sparks Community Anger

The current situation reportedly stems from an alleged assault that took place on Saturday night. According to accounts shared by local media, a Tangkhul Naga man was allegedly attacked by a group of Kuki-Zo individuals in Litan.

The reported incident quickly drew attention in nearby villages. By Sunday afternoon, residents from Naga-majority villages had gathered and approached the chief of a neighboring Kuki village, demanding that those accused in the assault be handed over.

Community leaders in the region have called for prompt action, urging the authorities to identify and take legal steps against those involved. Several Naga villages are said to be pressing for swift accountability, emphasizing the need for a transparent investigation.

Tense Atmosphere in Ukhrul District

Unverified videos circulating on social media appeared to show scenes from the area, with sounds resembling gunfire heard in the background. The clips, reportedly recorded in low-light conditions, have not been independently authenticated by authorities.

Residents in Ukhrul district, which has a Naga-majority population, described the atmosphere as tense but controlled under heavy security presence. Many have expressed concern over the rapid spread of rumors online, which they fear could inflame sentiments further.

Officials have not released detailed information about any injuries or arrests in connection with the alleged assault. The administration has urged citizens to remain calm and refrain from sharing unverified content that could disrupt communal harmony.

Appeal for Calm and Lawful Action

The district administration has emphasized that maintaining peace remains the top priority. Authorities have assured that any wrongdoing will be dealt with in accordance with the law, and investigations into the reported incident are expected to proceed under due process.

Observers note that inter-community tensions in parts of Manipur have required careful handling in recent months. In this instance, officials appear focused on preventing a localized dispute from spiraling into a broader confrontation.

For now, security forces continue to patrol Litan and adjoining areas, while community leaders on both sides are being engaged to defuse tensions. The effectiveness of these measures will likely determine how quickly normal life can resume in Ukhrul district.
