LabourStrike – A wave of labour unrest swept through the IMT Manesar industrial area on Wednesday as thousandsof contractual workers walked off their jobs, calling for higher wages and better working conditions. The situation prompted immediate administrative action, with local authorities stepping in to maintain order across the region.
Workers Rally Across Multiple Companies
The protest was not limited to a single employer. Contractual employees from several companies operating within IMT Manesar joined forces, reflecting widespread dissatisfaction among workers in the industrial belt. The agitation gained momentum following recent tensions at Honda Scooter and Motorcycle India Private Limited, which appeared to act as a catalyst for broader participation.
By mid-day, nearly 7,000 workers had assembled outside factory gates, raising slogans and demanding attention to their concerns. Notably, a considerable number of women workers were also present, underlining the scale and inclusivity of the protest.
Tensions Rise During Police Interaction
As the crowd grew, police personnel reached the site to assess the situation and engage with the demonstrators. However, interactions between the two sides quickly turned tense. In response to the developments, Gurugram District Magistrate and Deputy Commissioner Ajay Kumar invoked Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. The decision followed inputs from the police department, which warned that further demonstrations or processions could disrupt public order and create safety risks.
Under the newly issued directives, any gathering of five or more individuals without prior permission has been prohibited within IMT Manesar and nearby areas. Authorities have also imposed a strict ban on carrying weapons in public spaces. This includes not only firearms but also items such as sticks, knives, spears, and other objects that could be used to cause harm.
Focus on Public Safety and Traffic Movement
The administration has also placed emphasis on ensuring that daily life and industrial operations are not severely disrupted. The orders specifically prohibit blocking roads, interfering with traffic, or obstructing normal movement within the industrial zone.
Officials stated that these measures were necessary to prevent further tension and to safeguard both workers and the general public. The restrictions have come into effect immediately and will remain in place until further notice.
