Infrastructure – The Delhi government is preparing to move forward with an ambitious infrastructure project aimed at reducing traffic congestion across the national capital. Officials confirmed that an elevated corridor along the existing Ring Road will be developed in six phases, forming a continuous link between North and South Delhi.

Project Report Under Review
According to Public Works Department minister Parvesh Sahib Singh, the detailed project report has already been submitted by consultants and is currently being reviewed by authorities. He noted that the first stretch of construction is expected to begin between Mukarba Chowk and the Ashram intersection, marking the initial phase of the broader plan.
Officials indicated that subsequent phases will be taken up after careful on-ground assessments and feasibility checks. This phased approach is intended to ensure smoother execution while addressing location-specific challenges along the corridor.
Background and Estimated Cost
The elevated Ring Road proposal was first introduced in June last year as part of Delhi’s larger road decongestion strategy. The project carries an estimated cost of around Rs 7,000 crore and is designed to reduce traffic pressure on some of the city’s busiest routes.
Authorities believe that building an elevated structure above the existing Ring Road will help streamline vehicle movement without significantly disrupting current traffic patterns during construction.
Priority Stretches Identified
As per the current plan, several key stretches have been identified for priority development in the early phases. These include the route from Azadpur Flyover to Hanuman Temple near ISBT, covering approximately 9.5 km. Another important section will run from Chandgi Ram Akhara to Majnu Ka Tilla, spanning about 2.5 km.
In addition, a longer segment connecting Hanuman Temple (ISBT) to the DND Flyover, measuring roughly 11.5 km, is also expected to be taken up early in the project timeline. These stretches have been selected due to their high traffic volume and strategic importance in daily commuting.
Expected Impact on Traffic Flow
Officials anticipate that once completed, the elevated corridor will significantly cut travel time across major parts of the city. The redevelopment of the Mahatma Gandhi Road corridor, which forms a crucial part of the Ring Road network, is expected to play a central role in easing congestion.
Particular relief is expected at busy intersections between Mukarba Chowk and the Ashram Flyover, where traffic bottlenecks are a frequent concern. By diverting through traffic onto the elevated structure, surface-level congestion could see a noticeable reduction.
Connectivity and Network Expansion
The proposed elevated road will create seamless connectivity between key points in Delhi’s road network. It will link the Azadpur Flyover near Mukarba Chowk in North Delhi with the DND route, which further connects to the Ashram Flyover in South Delhi.
This integration is expected to strengthen the city’s arterial road system, allowing for more efficient movement of vehicles across long distances without repeated interruptions at intersections.
Long-Term Urban Mobility Goals
Spanning approximately 55 kilometers in total, the project is part of a broader effort to modernize Delhi’s transport infrastructure. Officials emphasized that the elevated Ring Road is not just about easing traffic but also about improving overall urban mobility.
By reducing congestion and improving travel efficiency, the initiative aims to support sustainable transportation goals while accommodating the city’s growing vehicular population.
If implemented as planned, the project could become one of the most significant road infrastructure developments in Delhi in recent years, offering long-term benefits for daily commuters and logistics movement alike.
