Higher Education – Andhra Pradesh Launches Industry-Led University at Sri City
Higher Education – Andhra Pradesh has introduced a new approach to higher education with the launch of Sricity International University at Sri City, aiming to align academic learning more closely with the needs of employers in a rapidly changing technology landscape. The university has been designed around industry participation, with companies expected to contribute to course planning, practical training and skill assessment.
Curriculum Designed With Employers
Education and IT Minister Nara Lokesh said the new institution represents a move away from conventional classroom-only education. He noted that technology is advancing quickly, particularly in artificial intelligence, digital systems and modern manufacturing, making it necessary for universities to update programmes more frequently.
According to the minister, industry involvement should begin at the curriculum stage rather than being limited to recruitment after graduation. SIU will work with companies to develop its courses and review them every year so that students are trained in skills that remain relevant to current workplace requirements.
India produces more than nine million graduates every year, but many employers continue to report gaps between academic qualifications and job-ready skills. The university plans to address this concern by bringing industry representatives into the learning process, including the development of practical modules and competency-based training.
Work-Study Model to Build Experience
A key feature of the university will be its Work-Study Dual Model. Under this structure, students will spend about one-third of their academic time in classrooms, while the remaining period will involve workplace learning with partner companies.
Paid internships are expected to begin in the first year itself. Students will receive a minimum monthly stipend of Rs 10,000 during these placements. By the time they complete their degrees, they are expected to gain more than two years of professional exposure through internships, projects and workplace assignments.
The model is intended to help students understand professional expectations early in their education and develop practical experience before entering the job market. It will also give companies an opportunity to guide students according to evolving sector-specific needs.
Sri City Industrial Network to Support Learning
Sri City has emerged as a major industrial hub, with around 200 companies from nearly 30 countries operating across sectors such as electronics, automobiles, engineering, logistics and advanced manufacturing. The presence of these companies is expected to provide SIU students with direct exposure to industrial operations and international business practices.
University officials believe the surrounding industrial ecosystem can function as an extended learning environment. Students will have opportunities to work near manufacturing facilities, interact with professionals and participate in projects connected to real business challenges.
The institution plans to focus on areas where demand is expected to grow, including artificial intelligence, automation, digital technologies and advanced manufacturing systems.
Startup Support and Leadership Development
SIU has also set up Station-S, an incubation centre intended to encourage entrepreneurship among students. The centre is already supporting 10 startups in association with Gnan Circle Ventures, a Category-I Venture Capital Fund.
Along with technical subjects, the university plans to place importance on communication, leadership, problem-solving and entrepreneurial thinking. The objective is to prepare students for employment while also enabling them to develop ideas that could become independent ventures.
Admissions Planned for 2026-27 Session
Admissions for the 2026-27 academic year will begin with undergraduate programmes in Computer Science and Engineering, Advanced Manufacturing, Finance and Accounts, and Digital Media and Communications.
With industry-led curriculum development, workplace exposure and startup support forming its core structure, Sricity International University is being positioned as a new higher education model in Andhra Pradesh. The initiative seeks to ensure that students leave university with academic credentials as well as practical experience relevant to modern workplaces.
