Healthcare – Rajouri Medical College Sees Boost Under Ayushman Bharat Initiative

Healthcare – The Government Medical College and Associated Hospital (GMC&AH) in Rajouri, Jammu and Kashmir, has witnessed notable improvements in its facilities and services following upgrades supported by the Ayushman Bharat scheme. Hospital authorities say the changes are helping them manage a growing patient load while enhancing the quality of care.

Rise in Medical Services and Patient Care

Medical Superintendent Dr. Shamim Ahmed Choudhary stated that the hospital has experienced a visible increase in key medical services, including surgeries and childbirth procedures. According to him, the rise reflects both improved infrastructure and greater public trust in the institution.

He noted that the hospital is now better equipped to handle a wider range of cases, including critical treatments such as dialysis. The administration has also taken steps to expand the workforce, with more specialist doctors and faculty members joining the institution. This has helped reduce pressure on existing staff and improve patient outcomes.

Infrastructure Expansion Underway

One of the major developments at the hospital is the expansion of physical infrastructure. A dedicated floor has been acquired for the gynaecology department, allowing for better organization of services and improved patient comfort. Work has also begun on a special feeder line aimed at ensuring uninterrupted power supply, which is essential for critical care units and medical equipment.

Officials believe that these upgrades will not only improve efficiency but also support long-term growth in healthcare delivery across the region.

Ayushman Bharat’s Role in Strengthening Healthcare

Launched in 2018, the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) is considered one of the largest publicly funded health insurance schemes in the world. It provides eligible families with annual health coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh, making hospital treatments more affordable for economically weaker sections.

The initiative is designed to reduce out-of-pocket medical expenses and improve access to quality healthcare services, particularly in rural and underserved areas. With over 12 crore families targeted under the scheme, it continues to play a key role in expanding India’s healthcare reach.

Multiple Pillars Supporting the Mission

Ayushman Bharat operates through several complementary components. One of them is the establishment of Ayushman Aarogya Mandirs, which focus on delivering primary healthcare services closer to communities. These centers aim to ensure that basic medical care is accessible without the need for long-distance travel.

Another key component is the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, which seeks to create a unified digital health ecosystem. By connecting healthcare providers through a digital network, the mission enables seamless sharing of medical records and improves coordination across different levels of care.

Focus on Long-Term Healthcare Capacity

In addition to immediate improvements, the government has also introduced the PM-Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM) in 2021. This initiative focuses on building resilient healthcare systems by strengthening infrastructure from village-level health centers to district hospitals.

At GMC&AH Rajouri, these combined efforts are gradually transforming the institution into a more capable and patient-friendly facility. Officials say the focus will remain on continuous improvement, ensuring that healthcare services keep pace with the needs of the local population.
