Healthcare – JNU Students Raise Concerns Over Campus Health Centre Issues
Healthcare – The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) has brought attention to multiple operational concerns at the university’s health centre following a meeting with the institution’s Chief Medical Officer on Friday.

Concerns Over Limited Financial Resources
Student representatives stated that the campus health facility is currently functioning under tight financial constraints. According to details shared during the discussion, the centre receives approximately ₹5,000 for stationery, ₹5 lakh for first aid supplies, and ₹1 lakh for miscellaneous expenses, including maintenance. The union believes these allocations fall short of what is required to effectively manage the day-to-day functioning of a healthcare unit serving a large student population.
They emphasized that the limited funding is beginning to affect both the quality and availability of services. Students expressed concern that without an increase in budgetary support, the facility may struggle to maintain even basic healthcare provisions.
Salary Delays Affecting Staff Morale
Another issue highlighted during the meeting was the delay in salary payments for part-time staff. The union was informed that some employees have not received their wages for nearly two months. Students pointed out that such delays are particularly troubling in a central university, where administrative systems are expected to function efficiently.
The lack of timely payment has reportedly impacted staff morale and could eventually affect service delivery if the situation continues. The union stressed that ensuring regular salaries is essential to maintaining a stable and reliable workforce at the health centre.
Reimbursement System Adds Financial Pressure
JNUSU also raised concerns about the reimbursement-based funding model currently in place. Under this system, expenses are reimbursed after vouchers are submitted. However, students claimed that not all submitted bills are fully cleared, leading to additional financial pressure on the facility.
They argued that this approach creates uncertainty in managing funds and makes it difficult for the health centre to plan its operations effectively. The union suggested that a more direct and consistent funding mechanism would help improve efficiency and reduce administrative delays.
Impact on Medical Services and Accessibility
Students further noted that financial limitations are beginning to affect access to certain medical services. In some cases, payments for diagnostic tests prescribed by doctors at the centre have reportedly been denied. According to the union, this is directly linked to the shortage of funds.
There are also concerns that the administration may be considering reducing services or shifting towards a self-sustaining model. The union warned that such changes could make healthcare less affordable and accessible for students, particularly those who rely on campus facilities as their primary source of medical support.
Call for Immediate Administrative Action
The students’ union has urged the university administration to take prompt steps to address these issues. Their demands include timely release of funds, clearance of pending salaries, and assurance that the full range of healthcare services will continue without compromise.
They stressed that access to reliable and affordable healthcare is a basic necessity for students and should not be affected by administrative or financial challenges. The union also indicated that it will continue to follow up on the matter to ensure that corrective measures are implemented.
The meeting has brought renewed focus on the importance of strengthening campus healthcare systems, especially in large educational institutions where thousands depend on such facilities for their well-being
