Oath Ceremony Held at Lok Niwas

The oath of office and secrecy was administered by Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, during an official ceremony attended by senior government representatives and dignitaries. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was present at the event along with several high-ranking officials from the administration and other invited guests.

The ceremony marked the formal beginning of Sandhu’s tenure as the constitutional head of Delhi’s administration, a position that carries significant responsibility in overseeing governance matters in the national capital.

Transition from Previous Lieutenant Governor

Sandhu takes over the role from Vinai Kumar Saxena, who had been serving as Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor before being reassigned to Ladakh. The change in leadership comes as part of a broader administrative reshuffle within the Union Territory governance structure.

As Lieutenant Governor, Sandhu will work alongside the elected government of Delhi while also representing the interests of the central government in administrative matters. The position often requires coordination between multiple institutions responsible for policy implementation and governance in the capital.

Extensive Diplomatic Career in Foreign Service

A career diplomat from the 1988 batch of the Indian Foreign Service, Sandhu brings decades of experience in international relations and diplomacy to his new role. Over the course of his career, he has held several important assignments that shaped India’s diplomatic engagement with major global partners.

One of the most notable phases of his diplomatic service came during his tenure as India’s Ambassador to the United States from February 2020 to January 2024. During this period, India and the United States expanded cooperation across multiple sectors, including defence collaboration, technology partnerships, and bilateral trade.

His experience in Washington has been particularly significant, as he served multiple postings at the Indian Embassy there. This made him one of the most experienced Indian diplomats dealing with United States affairs and strategic engagement.

Role in Multilateral Diplomacy

In addition to his work in Washington, Sandhu also served at the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations in New York between July 2005 and February 2009. During that assignment, he was involved in discussions related to global governance, international cooperation, and multilateral policy frameworks.

His involvement in such diplomatic roles allowed him to contribute to India’s participation in international forums and negotiations addressing a range of global issues.

Expectations from New Leadership in Delhi

Sandhu’s appointment comes at a time when the national capital continues to face complex governance challenges that require coordination between the Lieutenant Governor’s office and the elected Delhi government.

With his background in administration, diplomacy, and international policy, officials expect that his experience will contribute to managing governance processes in the Union Territory. The Lieutenant Governor’s office plays a key role in areas such as administrative oversight, coordination with central authorities, and facilitating policy implementation in the capital.

As Sandhu begins his tenure, attention will focus on how his experience in public service and diplomatic engagement translates into administrative leadership in Delhi.
