FreedomStruggle –  India on Monday observed Shaheedi Diwas, commemorating the enduring legacy of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar, and Shivaram Rajguru, whose execution during the freedom movement remains one of the most defining moments in the country’s struggle against colonial rule. Their sacrifice on March 23, 1931, continues to inspire generations and holds a significant place in the nation’s collective memory.

Remembering a Historic Sacrifice

The three revolutionaries were executed in Lahore jail by the British authorities, an act that intensified the demand for independence across India. Over the decades, March 23 has come to symbolize courage, resistance, and unwavering commitment to national freedom. Their actions and ideology left a lasting imprint on India’s journey toward independence.

Leaders Pay Tribute Across the Country

Several prominent leaders paid homage to the martyrs, acknowledging their role in shaping India’s history. Union Home Minister Amit Shah described them as transformative figures whose ideas and actions energized the youth and strengthened the freedom movement. He emphasized that their bravery instilled fear in the colonial administration and continues to evoke a deep sense of patriotism.

Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda also offered his respects, highlighting how the courage of the three revolutionaries awakened a spirit of self-respect and resistance among millions of Indians. According to him, their sacrifice played a critical role in pushing the independence movement toward a decisive phase.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh referred to Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev as immortal heroes, noting that their dedication and sacrifice remain a source of motivation for citizens even today. He stressed that their patriotism and commitment to the nation will continue to inspire people for years to come.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar echoed similar sentiments, pointing out that the courage and conviction demonstrated by the three revolutionaries serve as a powerful reminder of the values that underpin the nation.

Tributes from State Leadership

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath described their contribution as a turning point in India’s history, stating that their actions ignited a powerful revolutionary spirit. He added that their legacy reinforces the principle of prioritizing the nation above all else.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also paid tribute, noting that their sacrifice for unity and integrity remains permanently recorded in the country’s history. She said their ideals continue to guide efforts toward public service and nation-building.

The Revolutionary Movement and Its Impact

Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev were associated with the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association, an organization that aimed to challenge British rule through direct action. They sought to avenge the death of Lala Lajpat Rai, who had succumbed to injuries sustained during a protest against British policies. This led to the killing of British officer J.P. Saunders in 1928.

In a later act of protest, Bhagat Singh and his associates threw non-lethal bombs in the Central Legislative Assembly to draw attention to the cause of independence. Their intention was not to harm but to make a political statement. Following their arrest, the trial and subsequent execution drew widespread attention and intensified public support for the freedom struggle.
