Incident Reported After Religious Gathering

The situation unfolded in Rajpura village, located in Detroj taluka, where a religious programme was आयोजित on Wednesday night. During the event, attendees were served sev-khamani, a widely consumed Gujarati snack. Within hours, several people began experiencing symptoms such as vomiting, stomach pain, and diarrhoea.

By the early hours of Thursday, a total of 96 individuals had been transported to nearby hospitals after reporting discomfort. According to officials, the sudden onset of symptoms raised immediate concerns about possible food poisoning.

Medical Response and Current Health Status

Dr Chintan Desai, the district epidemic medical officer, confirmed that all affected individuals received timely medical care. Of the 96 patients admitted, 38 remained under observation in hospitals, while the rest were discharged after receiving treatment.

Doctors attending to the patients reported that their condition was stable and not life-threatening. Health teams acted swiftly to manage the situation, ensuring that those affected were monitored and treated without delay.

Preventive Measures for Other Villagers

In addition to those hospitalised, health authorities also provided preventive care to 214 other villagers who had consumed the same snack but had not yet shown symptoms. This precautionary step was taken to minimise the risk of further illness and to ensure early intervention if symptoms developed later.

Medical teams visited the village soon after the first reports emerged, conducting on-ground assessments and advising residents on safety measures. Awareness about hygiene and safe food consumption was also shared with the community.

Investigation Underway to Identify Cause

Authorities have initiated a detailed investigation to determine the exact cause of the suspected food poisoning. Samples of the food served at the event, along with water samples from the area, have been collected for laboratory testing.

Officials from the food safety department and local police have also been informed about the incident. The findings from the sample analysis are expected to provide clarity on whether contamination occurred during preparation, storage, or distribution of the food.

Focus on Food Safety at Public Events

Incidents like this have once again highlighted the importance of maintaining strict hygiene standards, especially during large gatherings where food is served to many people. Health officials emphasised the need for proper handling, storage, and preparation of food items to avoid such situations.

Local administration has assured that necessary steps will be taken once the investigation is complete, including action against any lapses found in food safety practices.

As authorities continue their inquiry, the focus remains on ensuring the well-being of the affected individuals and preventing similar incidents in the future.
