Group Falls Ill After Consuming Meal

According to officials from the Health Department, the incident began on March 13 when a group of individuals visited the hotel and consumed non-vegetarian dishes. Within a day, all members of the group reportedly began experiencing symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea.

Initially, they sought medical help at a nearby Primary Health Centre. However, as their condition did not improve, they were later shifted to the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai for further treatment.

Child’s Condition Remains Critical

While seven of the affected individuals responded well to treatment and were discharged by Tuesday, the situation remains serious for a seven-year-old boy from the group. His health deteriorated significantly, prompting doctors to transfer him to a private hospital for advanced care.

Hospital sources have confirmed that the child is currently in the intensive care unit and continues to be in a critical state. Doctors are closely monitoring his condition.

Authorities Take Immediate Action

Following the incident, food safety officials carried out a detailed inspection of the hotel premises. During the inspection, they collected samples of the food served to the group for laboratory testing to determine the exact cause of contamination.

As a precautionary measure, authorities suspended the hotel’s licence and imposed a fine of ₹8,000. The establishment has also been sealed to prevent further operations until the investigation is completed.

Sanitary Inspection and Water Testing

In addition to food checks, sanitary officers examined the cleanliness and hygiene standards maintained at the hotel. Water samples from the premises were also collected for analysis to rule out any contamination from the water supply.

Officials indicated that the inspection covered kitchen conditions, storage practices, and overall sanitation. Any lapses identified during this process will be considered while deciding further action against the establishment.

Possible Encroachment Under Scrutiny

Authorities have also raised concerns regarding the location of the hotel, suspecting that it may have been operating on encroached government land. As part of the ongoing investigation, steps have been taken to address this issue as well.

Officials stated that the structure linked to the hotel has been removed in connection with the encroachment concern, although further verification is still underway.

Focus on Food Safety Compliance

The incident has once again highlighted the importance of strict adherence to food safety regulations, especially in busy urban areas where eateries serve a large number of customers daily.

Health officials have urged restaurant owners to maintain proper hygiene, ensure safe food handling practices, and regularly monitor the quality of ingredients used. They also advised the public to report any suspected food safety violations to authorities promptly.

The results of the collected samples are awaited, and further action will depend on the findings of the laboratory analysis.
