Floods – Kerala Chief Minister Honors Rescue Hero as Relief Efforts Intensify

Floods -Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheesan paid an emotional visit to the family of swimming instructor R. Rajesh, who lost his life while rescuing people trapped during flash floods in Kannur’s Pulingome region. The Chief Minister visited Rajesh’s residence in Thiruvananthapuram to offer his condolences and express the state’s support to the bereaved family. Rajesh was widely acknowledged for risking his own life in an effort to save residents caught in rapidly rising floodwaters.

Flood Situation Continues to Affect Thousands

Kerala remains under significant pressure from widespread monsoon flooding, with the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) reporting that at least 25 people have died, while four others are still missing. Continuous rainfall and overflowing rivers have disrupted normal life in several districts, forcing thousands of residents to leave their homes as rescue and relief operations continue across affected areas.

Relief Camps Shelter Displaced Families

According to official figures, more than 18,400 people are currently staying in 418 relief camps established across the state. Authorities said 52 houses have been completely destroyed, while another 565 homes have suffered partial damage due to flooding and landslides. Local administrations, supported by emergency response teams, are working to provide food, medical care, and essential supplies to displaced families.

Financial Assistance Announced for Affected Households

During his inspection of flood-hit areas in Pathanamthitta district, Chief Minister Satheesan announced immediate financial assistance of ₹10,000 for every affected household. The district remains among the worst impacted, with 133 relief camps accommodating more than 6,400 people. A large number of these camps are located in the Thiruvalla region, where floodwaters have remained stagnant, making rehabilitation efforts more challenging.

District Authorities Given Full Operational Powers

Following a high-level review meeting with district officials at the Kozhencherry Rest House in Aranmula, the Chief Minister stated that district administrations have been granted complete administrative and financial authority to ensure relief measures are implemented without delay. He said the government is focused on accelerating assistance and ensuring that affected communities receive support as quickly as possible.

Plans to Improve Flood Preparedness

Addressing the recurring flood situation, Satheesan noted that many rivers in the state have experienced a decline in water-carrying capacity because of accumulated silt. He said the government would begin measures to remove sediment from rivers to improve water flow and reduce future flood risks. The Chief Minister also outlined plans to strengthen Kerala’s disaster management framework and develop one of India’s most advanced weather forecasting systems to improve preparedness for extreme weather events.

Assam Also Expands Relief Measures

Flood conditions have also affected parts of Assam, where heavy rainfall and swollen rivers have caused widespread disruption. In response, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced additional compensation for the families of those who lost their lives in the floods. Authorities in the state are continuing rescue, rehabilitation, and relief operations as they work to support affected communities.
