FireSafety – Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta met the bereaved families affected by the devastating Palam fire incident, which claimed nine lives earlier this month. During her visit on Tuesday, she conveyed her condolences and assured full support to those grappling with the tragedy.
Chief Minister Meets Grieving Families
Calling the incident deeply distressing, Gupta said the loss of innocent lives in such circumstances is beyond words. She spent time with the affected families, offering comfort and reiterating the government’s commitment to stand by them during this difficult period. According to her, every possible measure will be taken to provide assistance, including financial relief and rehabilitation support.
She emphasized that the administration remains sensitive to the needs of the victims’ families and will ensure that no effort is spared in helping them recover from the tragedy.
Details of the Palam Fire Incident
The fatal fire broke out on March 18 in a four-storey building located in the Palam area of southwest Delhi. The blaze resulted in nine deaths and left three others injured. The building, situated in Ram Chowk Market, housed a cloth and cosmetic showroom on its lower levels, while the owner’s family lived on the upper floors.
Initial findings suggest that the fire spread rapidly, making rescue operations extremely challenging. The structure’s layout and internal conditions may have contributed to the high casualty count.
Preliminary Findings Raise Safety Concerns
Delhi Home Minister Ashish Sood shared early observations from the fire department, indicating that the basement contained highly inflammable materials. Items such as garments, cosmetics, perfumes, thinner, and nail polish were reportedly stored in large quantities, which may have intensified the fire.
He also pointed out that the building had only a single staircase connecting all floors, and it lacked external access. This limited escape route likely hindered evacuation efforts and emergency response.
Sood criticized previous administrations for not upgrading fire safety infrastructure and accused political opponents of turning the tragedy into a blame game instead of focusing on solutions.
Inquiry Ordered Into the Incident
Soon after the incident, the Delhi government ordered a magisterial inquiry to determine the exact cause of the fire and identify any lapses in safety compliance. Officials are expected to examine whether building regulations were violated and if proper fire safety measures were in place.
The inquiry aims to establish accountability and recommend steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.
NHRC Seeks Report From Authorities
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has also taken cognizance of the incident. On Tuesday, it issued notices to the Delhi government and the city’s police commissioner, seeking a detailed report within two weeks.
The commission observed that if the reported details are accurate, the case could involve serious concerns related to human rights violations, particularly regarding safety standards and regulatory oversight.

The Palam fire has once again highlighted the risks associated with mixed-use buildings in densely populated areas. Experts stress the importance of strict enforcement of fire safety norms, proper storage of hazardous materials, and accessible evacuation routes.
