ElectionWatch – Rahul Gandhi Revives ‘Vote Theft’ Charge After BJP Wins
ElectionWatch – Rahul Gandhi renewed his criticism of the Bharatiya Janata Party after the party secured major victories in the Assam and West Bengal Assembly elections, accusing the ruling side of benefiting from what he described as irregularities in the electoral process.

The Congress leader, who serves as the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, made the remarks in a post shared on X on Wednesday. In his statement, Rahul Gandhi alleged that several BJP lawmakers had entered Parliament through manipulated voting practices. He also referred to the Haryana government as “illegitimate” while continuing his long-running criticism of the election system and central institutions.
Rahul Gandhi Targets BJP Over Election Process
Rahul Gandhi claimed that a significant number of BJP Members of Parliament were elected due to what he called “vote theft.” Using sharp political language, he suggested that such representatives could be described as “infiltrators,” a term often used in political debates by BJP leaders themselves.
He further alleged that democratic institutions were being influenced and said the ruling establishment was attempting to control the electoral system. According to him, the government fears transparent elections because fair voting, he argued, would reduce the BJP’s parliamentary strength considerably.
The Congress MP also accused authorities of interfering with voter lists and electoral procedures. He maintained that institutions meant to function independently were under pressure from those in power.
Haryana Election Defeat Continues To Fuel Congress Allegations
The Congress party has consistently questioned the outcome of the 2024 Haryana Assembly elections, where it was defeated despite strong expectations of returning to power. BJP secured 48 seats in the 90-member House, while Congress managed to win 37.
After the results, Congress leaders repeatedly raised concerns regarding voter data and alleged irregularities in the election process. The party pointed to exit polls and internal assessments that had predicted a stronger performance for Congress.
Rahul Gandhi has since held several media briefings discussing alleged discrepancies in electoral rolls. However, the Election Commission has maintained its position and reportedly asked for documented evidence supporting these allegations. No formal written submission detailing the claims has been publicly presented by the Congress leadership so far.
BJP Registers Major Gains In West Bengal
The latest remarks from Rahul Gandhi came shortly after BJP achieved a major electoral breakthrough in West Bengal. The party won 206 seats in the state Assembly election, marking a dramatic improvement from its earlier tally in the 2021 polls.
The Trinamool Congress, which had dominated the previous election with over 200 seats, saw a sharp decline and finished far behind BJP in the latest contest. Political analysts described the result as one of the most significant shifts in West Bengal’s recent electoral history.
The BJP leadership celebrated the outcome as evidence of growing support across eastern India, while opposition parties began reassessing their strategies after the setback.
Strong Performance For BJP Alliance In Assam
In Assam as well, the BJP-led alliance delivered a commanding performance. BJP secured 82 seats, while its allies, including the Bodoland People’s Front and Asom Gana Parishad, added 10 seats each to the coalition tally.
Congress and its alliance partners were restricted to a much smaller presence in the Assembly, winning only 21 seats combined. The result strengthened BJP’s political position in the Northeast and reinforced its regional dominance.
The latest exchange between Rahul Gandhi and the BJP highlights the continuing political confrontation over election credibility and institutional functioning, issues that are expected to remain central in the national political discourse ahead of future elections.
