Elections – Women and Gen Z Drive Momentum in Assam Poll Campaign
Elections – Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has expressed strong confidence in the prospects of the BJP-led alliance ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, pointing to growing enthusiasm among women and younger voters as a decisive factor shaping the campaign.

Rising Participation Among Women and Youth
Addressing reporters during a campaign interaction, Sarma highlighted a visible shift in voter engagement. He noted that women are turning out in large numbers at public meetings, while young voters, particularly from Generation Z, are actively participating in rallies. According to him, this surge in participation reflects a broader sense of excitement surrounding the elections.
He emphasized that both groups are not just passive observers but are playing a central role in driving the campaign forward. Their involvement, he suggested, could significantly influence the final outcome.
Changing Electoral Dynamics in Key Constituencies
Reflecting on his recent visits to Dhakuakhana and Lakhimpur, the Chief Minister pointed out how electoral dynamics have evolved since the last Assembly polls. These constituencies were previously considered highly competitive, with results remaining uncertain until the final stages of vote counting.
However, Sarma claimed that the situation has now shifted in favor of the ruling alliance. He attributed this change to development initiatives undertaken by the state government along with central schemes introduced under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to him, these efforts have strengthened public trust and could result in a clear mandate for the BJP-AGP-BPF alliance.
Opposition Strategy and Key Concerns
When questioned about the opposition and the issues likely to dominate the election narrative, Sarma maintained that infiltration continues to be an important concern for the state. At the same time, he chose not to directly engage with opposition leaders, stating that doing so would unnecessarily draw attention to them.
He suggested that the focus of the campaign should remain on governance and public welfare rather than political exchanges, indicating confidence in the ruling alliance’s performance record.
Confidence Ahead of Polling
Projecting optimism ahead of voting day, the Chief Minister said there is no need to manufacture issues to attract voters. He stated that the electorate is already showing strong interest in the electoral process and appears inclined to support continuity in governance.
Sarma also mentioned that the alliance is preparing to release its vision document, which will outline its future plans and policy direction. He indicated that this document would serve as a roadmap for the next phase of governance if the alliance returns to power.
Campaign Intensifies Across the State
With election campaigning gaining pace, the BJP-led alliance is focusing on highlighting its governance record, welfare schemes, and outreach efforts. The campaign strategy appears to be centered on consolidating support among key voter groups, particularly youth and women, who are emerging as influential participants in the political process.
The Chief Minister recently held a rally in Lakhimpur as part of this outreach effort and is set to contest once again from his traditional Jalukbari constituency.
Election Schedule and Political Contest
The Assam Assembly elections will be conducted in a single phase on April 9, covering all 126 constituencies. The counting of votes is scheduled for May 4.
The election is expected to witness a direct contest between the incumbent BJP-led alliance and the Congress party. While the ruling coalition aims to secure a third consecutive term in office, the opposition is seeking to regain power after remaining out of government in recent years.
As campaigning continues, the role of emerging voter groups and the effectiveness of governance-driven narratives are likely to play a crucial role in determining the outcome of this closely watched election.
