Elections – DMK and Congress Finalise Seat Sharing for Tamil Nadu Polls

Elections –  Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. K. Stalin has welcomed the completion of a seat-sharing arrangement with the Indian National Congress for the forthcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly election, describing the agreement as an important step toward strengthening the ruling alliance’s electoral prospects. The understanding concludes several weeks of discussions between the two parties and confirms the continuation of the coalition currently governing the state.

Seat Allocation Formula Confirmed

According to the arrangement, the Indian National Congress will contest 28 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly. The remaining constituencies will largely be contested by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, while a portion will be distributed among other partners in the alliance. The formula reflects the dominant position of the DMK within the coalition while allowing space for its partners to maintain their presence in key regions.

Stalin Emphasises Longstanding Political Partnership

Speaking about the agreement, Stalin said the understanding reflects the continuing cooperation between the DMK and the Congress, two parties that have maintained an electoral partnership in the state for several years. He noted that the alliance shares a common commitment to governance centred on social welfare, inclusive development and secular political values.

Party leaders have repeatedly highlighted these principles as core elements of the coalition’s political identity, describing the alliance as a broad platform focused on social justice and state development.

Negotiations Conclude After Weeks of Discussions

Although the final agreement was reached through consensus, discussions between the parties reportedly involved careful negotiation. Differences over the number of seats and the political role of the Congress within the alliance were addressed during the talks.

Both parties eventually opted for compromise in order to preserve unity within the ruling coalition. Maintaining a stable alliance ahead of a major election was viewed by the leadership as more important than allowing disagreements over constituency distribution to escalate.

Strategic Role of Congress Within the Alliance

Within the coalition framework, the Congress is expected to contest a limited number of constituencies that are considered strategically favourable. Despite having a smaller organisational presence in Tamil Nadu compared with regional parties, the Congress continues to hold influence in several districts and among particular social groups.

Political observers note that its presence in the alliance allows the ruling front to broaden its appeal, particularly among communities that maintain historical ties with the national party. The partnership also helps position the coalition within the larger national political landscape.

Lessons from Previous Election Performance

Confidence within the DMK camp is also shaped by the alliance’s performance in the previous Assembly election. In that contest, the DMK secured a decisive victory and formed the government with a comfortable majority in the state legislature.

Although the Congress contested a smaller number of constituencies, it achieved a strong success rate in the seats allocated to it. Party leaders believe that this pattern demonstrated the practical effectiveness of the alliance structure, where smaller partners contributed meaningfully to the coalition’s overall electoral outcome.

Alliance Narrative and Governance Vision

For the DMK, the coalition arrangement forms part of a broader political narrative tied to the Dravidian political tradition. The party continues to highlight policies focused on social welfare schemes, state autonomy and inclusive growth as key elements of its governance approach.

By maintaining a coalition that includes regional and national parties along with left-leaning groups, the DMK leadership aims to present the alliance as a diverse ideological platform rather than a single-party political force.

Competitive Political Environment Ahead

Despite its confidence, the ruling alliance acknowledges that the upcoming election could present new challenges. The principal opposition front led by the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, supported by the Bharatiya Janata Party, is expected to mount a strong campaign against the government.

In addition, emerging political formations are attempting to expand their presence in the state. Among them is the party established by actor-politician Vijay, whose entry into electoral politics has attracted attention and could influence sections of younger voters.

United Front Ahead of Election Campaign

For Stalin and the DMK leadership, completing the seat-sharing arrangement signals more than a routine electoral step. It demonstrates that the alliance that brought the party to power remains united ahead of the campaign period.

By presenting a coordinated political front well before the election schedule intensifies, the ruling coalition hopes to project stability and organisational strength. The DMK believes that a united alliance, combined with its governance record and welfare initiatives, will help it seek another mandate from voters across Tamil Nadu.
