Elections – Commission Orders Removal of Security Cover for Accused Leaders
Elections – The Election Commission of India has asked West Bengal authorities to immediately review and withdraw state-provided security cover given to political leaders facing criminal charges, as preparations intensify for the upcoming polling scheduled later this month.

Directive Issued Ahead of Poll Dates
With voting set for April 23 and April 29, the Commission has directed officials to submit a compliance report after its deadline for action expired at midnight on Thursday. The instructions were sent to senior police officers across the state, emphasising that individuals with pending criminal cases should no longer receive government-funded security protection.
The order applies to leaders across party lines, including those currently out on bail or released on parole. Authorities have been told to ensure that such individuals do not continue to benefit from security arrangements funded by the state.
Focus on Rationalising Security Deployment
District magistrates, who also serve as district election officers, along with superintendents of police, have been instructed to reassess existing security allocations. The Commission highlighted that many of these arrangements were unnecessary and must be discontinued without delay.
In addition, leaders who had earlier received security coverage based on their official roles or perceived threats will also be subject to review. The Commission made it clear that such privileges should not be extended unless strictly justified.
Crackdown on Pending Criminal Cases
The Commission has also asked police forces to act swiftly against individuals facing serious charges. Those accused in non-bailable offences must be arrested within ten days, according to the directive.
Police officials at various levels, including sub-divisional officers and deputy superintendents, have been tasked with preparing updated lists of absconding suspects. Targeted operations are expected to follow to bring these individuals into custody.
At the local level, station officers have been told to identify sensitive areas prone to violence, monitor habitual offenders, and take preventive measures to maintain order during the election period.
Questions Raised Over Security Allocation
The Commission has sought an explanation from the state’s Director General of Police regarding the large number of ruling party leaders receiving government security. Officials have been asked to submit a detailed report within a few days, outlining the basis for these allocations.
Data reviewed by the Commission indicates that over 2,000 police personnel are currently assigned to provide security to hundreds of leaders and supporters linked to the ruling party. This has prompted concerns about the impartial use of state resources during the election period.
Ensuring Fair Campaign Environment
Alongside these measures, the Commission has stressed the importance of providing equal security for all political parties during campaign activities. It has instructed authorities to ensure that election duties are carried out without bias and that all participants are protected.
Police have also been directed to expedite the resolution of election-related cases from previous polls. This step is aimed at preventing unresolved issues from influencing the current electoral process.
Extended Deployment of Central Forces
In response to past incidents of violence, the Commission has decided to continue the deployment of central armed forces beyond the polling phase. These forces will remain stationed in the state until the counting of votes is completed on May 4.
Additional units will be responsible for safeguarding electronic voting machines, storage facilities, and counting centres. This move comes after reviewing reports of unrest linked to earlier elections, including incidents following the 2021 assembly polls.
The Commission believes that sustained security presence is necessary to prevent any recurrence of post-election violence and to ensure that the entire process concludes peacefully.
Background of Previous Violence
The decision also reflects concerns arising from past electoral tensions in the state. After the last assembly elections, several areas witnessed clashes, resulting in casualties within a short period following the announcement of results.
Authorities are now under pressure to prevent similar situations, with strict monitoring and enforcement measures being put in place well before polling begins.
