Election – Tamil Nadu Assembly Polls Set for April 23
Election – The Election Commission of India has confirmed that voting for all 234 Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu will take place in a single phase on April 23, initiating a crucial electoral battle in the state. With the countdown to polling underway, the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is preparing to unveil its list of candidates, likely to be released soon as discussions with alliance partners approach closure.

Poll Timeline and Key Dates
As per the official schedule, the nomination process will begin on March 30 and remain open until April 6. Voters across the state will cast their ballots on April 23, and the counting of votes is scheduled for May 4, when the final results will also be announced. The timeline has set political parties into motion, accelerating preparations and campaign strategies.
Alliance Talks Near Completion
Negotiations within the DMK-led alliance have reached an advanced stage, although some matters are still being resolved. The party has already secured agreements with several of its partners, including smaller regional groups and left-leaning parties, regarding seat distribution. These discussions have helped streamline a significant portion of the alliance structure ahead of the elections.
Congress Demands Delay Final Agreement
One of the major hurdles remains the ongoing dialogue with the Congress party, a key ally in the coalition. Congress has been allocated 28 seats in total. While it has agreed to contest 23 of these constituencies, it is seeking revisions in five seats where differences persist.
The disagreement primarily involves constituencies such as Srivaikuntam and Killiyoor. Congress leaders are reluctant to give up these segments, as they were won by the party in the previous election. On the other hand, the DMK is keen to field its own candidates in these areas, resulting in a standoff that has delayed the final announcement.
Other Allies Add to Complexity
Apart from Congress, demands from other alliance partners have also contributed to the delay. A faction of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), led by Premalatha Vijayakanth, has reportedly sought seats like Rishivandiyam, Virugambakkam, and Ambur.
However, the DMK is cautious about conceding these constituencies, as they are considered electorally strong for the party. The leadership appears determined to retain control over these regions, adding another layer of negotiation complexity.
CPI(M) Raises Concerns Over Seat Allocation
The Communist Party of India (Marxist), another important ally, has also expressed dissatisfaction. Sources indicate that the party is unhappy with a reduced number of seats being offered and is advocating for constituencies where the DMK has historically performed well.
This demand has further prolonged discussions, as balancing the interests of multiple alliance partners remains a delicate task for the DMK leadership.
Candidate List Announcement Expected Soon
Preparations were reportedly underway at Anna Arivalayam, the DMK headquarters, for the release of the candidate list earlier. However, the announcement was postponed due to the absence of a final consensus among key allies.
With negotiations continuing at a fast pace, party insiders suggest that a mutually acceptable agreement is likely to be reached shortly. Once the remaining differences are resolved, the DMK is expected to publish its much-anticipated list of candidates, marking a significant step forward in its election campaign.
Political Atmosphere Intensifies
As Tamil Nadu heads toward polling day, the political environment is becoming increasingly active. Parties are working to finalise alliances, select candidates, and prepare for a competitive campaign season. The coming days are expected to be decisive in shaping the electoral landscape ahead of voting.
