Education – Indian Universities Achieve Strong Gains in Global Subject Rankings
Education – India’s leading universities have delivered an impressive performance in the latest edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, released on Wednesday. Among them, the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi has emerged as a standout performer, while several other institutions have also secured places among the top 50 globally across various academic disciplines.

IIT Delhi Leads with Strong Engineering Rankings
IIT Delhi has recorded notable progress this year, particularly in engineering and technology fields. The institute has secured a place among the world’s top 50 in five major subjects, reinforcing its reputation as India’s top-ranked institution in the Engineering & Technology category. It currently holds the 36th position globally in this broad faculty area.
The five disciplines from IIT Delhi featured in the global top 50 include Electrical Engineering (36), Mechanical Engineering (44), Computer Science (45), Chemical Engineering (48), and Civil Engineering (50). This marks a significant improvement compared to the previous year, when only one subject from the institute had made it into the top 50. The consistent upward movement across multiple disciplines highlights the institute’s growing academic strength.
Broader Gains Across Indian Institutions
India’s overall presence in the rankings has strengthened considerably. This year, Indian universities have secured 27 positions in the global top 50 across different subjects and faculty areas, more than doubling last year’s total of 12. These achievements are spread across 12 institutions, indicating a broader improvement in the country’s higher education landscape.
Jawaharlal Nehru University and Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani are among the institutions that have performed well, alongside prominent IITs such as IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur, and IIT Madras.
Individual Institutions Make Global Impact
Some institutions have delivered particularly notable performances in specific disciplines. The Indian School of Mines in Dhanbad has achieved a global rank of 21 in Mineral and Mining Engineering, while the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad has secured the same position in both Business and Management Studies and Marketing.
Importantly, this year marks India’s first appearance in the global top 50 for Marketing, reflecting the expanding academic footprint of Indian institutions beyond traditional strengths.
Ranking Methodology and Global Scope
The QS World University Rankings by Subject are published annually by QS Quacquarelli Symonds, a London-based higher education analytics organisation. In its 16th edition, the rankings assessed over 21,000 academic programmes offered by nearly 1,900 universities across more than 100 countries. The evaluation spans 55 subjects grouped under five broad faculty areas.
Future Growth Hinges on Research and Collaboration
According to QS leadership, India’s improved performance signals its increasing competitiveness on the global academic stage. However, sustaining this momentum will require continued focus on research quality, stronger international partnerships, and the development of distinct institutional identities.
The latest rankings underline a positive trajectory for Indian higher education, with institutions steadily improving their global standing and expanding their influence across diverse academic fields.
