Education – The Delhi government has issued a clear directive to private schools, emphasizing that parents must not be restricted to purchasing textbooks, uniforms, or stationery from specific vendors chosen by schools. Government Emphasizes Parental Choice
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that schools must openly communicate—through notice boards, official websites, and in-house stores—that parents are free to purchase required items from any vendor they prefer. According to her, while schools may recommend a list of suppliers for convenience, they cannot make it mandatory for parents to buy exclusively from them.
She made it clear that the administration views forced purchases as a serious violation and warned of strict consequences for non-compliance. These could include strong regulatory action and, in extreme cases, even the takeover of institutions found repeatedly ignoring the rules.
Surprise Inspections to Ensure Compliance
To reinforce the directive, the government is planning inspections across private and aided schools. These checks, officials say, will not be superficial or symbolic. Instead, they will be guided by complaints and feedback received directly from parents.

Officials found that the school was operating without a valid fire safety certificate, raising serious concerns about student safety. Additionally, its swimming pool was functioning without the required licence. Authorities have since taken action, including sealing the pool facility.
These findings have strengthened the government’s resolve to extend scrutiny beyond individual cases and examine practices across all private and aided schools in the city.

Officials have confirmed that the crackdown will not be limited to a single institution. Instead, a broader review is underway to ensure that schools adhere to regulations related to transparency, safety, and fair practices.
