Education – Delhi Conducts Transparent Draw for EWS School Admissions 2026
Education – The Delhi government has begun the computerized lottery process for entry-level admissions in private unaided recognized schools for the 2026–27 academic year. The draw, covering Nursery, Kindergarten, and Class 1 under the EWS/DG and Children With Special Needs (CWSN) categories, was carried out on Monday in the presence of parents and other stakeholders to maintain openness and accountability.

Increase in Schools and Seat Availability
Officials from the Education Department reported a notable expansion in both participating institutions and available seats this year. The number of schools included in the admission process has grown to 2,308, up from 2,219 in the previous academic session. This rise reflects broader participation from private institutions in ensuring inclusive education.
Seat availability has also increased significantly across categories. Under the EWS/DG segment, the number of seats has risen to 48,092 from last year’s 44,045. Similarly, seats allocated for children with special needs have gone up from 6,471 to 7,609. In total, 55,701 seats are available this year, marking an addition of 5,185 seats compared to the previous cycle.
Technology Strengthens Transparency
The department credited technological upgrades for improving the efficiency and reliability of the admission process. A software system developed by the National Informatics Centre has been used to manage applications and conduct the draw. Additionally, Aadhaar-based encrypted verification has helped eliminate duplicate and incorrect entries.
Officials stated that these measures ensure that only genuine applicants benefit from the scheme, reducing chances of misuse. The use of digital systems has also minimized manual intervention, thereby strengthening trust in the process.
Application Numbers Show Steady Growth
The Directorate of Education received a total of 1,39,524 applications this year. Out of these, 1,38,536 applications under the EWS/DG category were found to be complete and eligible for consideration. In the CWSN category, the number of valid applications rose slightly to 988 from 904 last year, indicating a gradual increase in awareness and participation.
Authorities emphasized that once the lottery results are finalized, no modifications will be permitted. This rule is intended to maintain fairness and prevent any post-draw alterations.
Immediate Allotment and Simplified Verification
Education Minister Ashish Sood confirmed that school allotments were issued immediately after the draw was completed. He noted that several improvements have been introduced this year to simplify the admission process for parents. One of the key changes is digital document verification through mobile platforms, which reduces the need for repeated visits to schools.
This step is expected to ease the burden on families and make the overall process more convenient. It also aligns with the government’s broader push toward digitization in public services.
Next Steps in Admission Process
According to the minister, the next phase of admissions will begin within three days of the draw. This stage will focus on completing formalities for selected students and ensuring that admissions proceed without delays.
The government aims to make the transition from selection to enrollment as smooth as possible, minimizing complications for parents and schools alike.
Focus on Inclusive and Fair Education
Through this initiative, thousands of children from economically weaker sections and those with special needs are expected to secure admission in private schools. Officials reiterated that the process is designed to be equitable, transparent, and merit-based, ensuring that eligible families receive the benefits intended for them.
The continued expansion of seats and adoption of technology indicate a sustained effort to make quality education accessible to a wider section of society.
