Education – The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has initiated a fresh round of appointments by deploying 18 school inspectors across multiple zones, marking a step toward reinforcing oversight within its education framework.
Deployment Across Key Zones
The latest order, issued by the civic body’s Central Establishment Department on April 20, outlines the placement of inspectors in several important zones, including West, Keshavpuram, Shahdara North, Shahdara South, Rohini, Civil Lines, Karol Bagh, Narela, and Central. All appointed officials have been instructed to report immediately to their respective Zonal Deputy Directors of Education.
These appointments are part of a broader administrative effort aimed at improving monitoring mechanisms at the grassroots level. Authorities indicate that additional postings are expected soon to further strengthen the system.
Role and Responsibilities of Inspectors
School inspectors play a central role in maintaining the quality and functioning of schools under the civic body. Each inspector is assigned a cluster of schools within a specific zone and is responsible for assessing academic performance, reviewing daily operations, and ensuring that infrastructure standards are met.
Typically, an inspector supervises around 30 to 35 schools. Their duties include monitoring student attendance, evaluating teaching practices, and ensuring that administrative guidelines are properly followed. They also act as an important communication bridge between school principals and higher authorities, helping identify challenges and report them for timely resolution.
Vacancies and Limited Response
Despite efforts to fill a larger number of positions, the response from eligible officials has been limited. Out of 81 sanctioned posts for school inspectors, orders had been issued for 63 positions. However, many candidates declined the role, resulting in only 18 officials accepting the appointments so far.
Officials familiar with the process noted that the department has been actively encouraging more candidates to take up these roles. A reserve list has also been maintained to address the shortfall and ensure that vacancies can be filled as quickly as possible.
Impact of Staff Shortage
The shortage of inspectors has had a noticeable impact on the monitoring system. Ideally, the workload is distributed to maintain efficiency, but the current gap has made it difficult to adhere to the standard ratio of schools per inspector.
