Rise in Cases Reported in Delhi

The NCRB data showed that crimes targeting foreign nationals in Delhi rose significantly from 40 cases in 2023 to 64 in 2024. This increase has placed Delhi at the top among Union Territories for offences involving foreign citizens.

Across the country, Maharashtra recorded the second-highest number of crimes against foreigners with 41 cases. Nationally, a total of 257 incidents involving foreign victims were reported in 2024. The number stood at 238 in 2023 and 192 in 2022, indicating a steady rise over the past two years.

Sharp Increase in Crimes Committed by Foreigners

Apart from offences against foreign nationals, Delhi also witnessed a considerable rise in crimes committed by foreigners. Authorities registered 201 such cases in 2024, compared to 130 cases in 2023. The figures represent an increase of more than 54 percent within a year.

Among all states and Union Territories, West Bengal reported the highest number of crimes involving foreign nationals as accused, with 992 cases registered during 2024. Maharashtra followed with 386 cases, while Delhi recorded the highest figure among Union Territories.

Details of Offences Registered in Delhi

The cases involving crimes against foreigners in Delhi covered a wide range of offences. Official records included one murder case and one attempt to murder. Theft-related offences accounted for seven cases, while extortion contributed one case.

Authorities also recorded six cheating cases and 29 forgery-related incidents, making forgery the largest category among the offences reported. In addition, one case related to counterfeiting was registered, while 13 other cases fell under miscellaneous categories.

Chargesheet Filing Rate Highlighted

The NCRB figures also reflected the pace of investigation and legal proceedings linked to these offences. Delhi reported a chargesheet filing rate of 75.9 percent, which was higher compared to the combined average of Union Territories at 45.5 percent.

Law enforcement agencies have continued to focus on monitoring offences involving foreign nationals, particularly in metropolitan areas that attract international tourists, students, and business travellers. Officials believe improved reporting systems and better tracking mechanisms may also have contributed to the rise in registered cases.

National Trend Shows Gradual Increase

The latest statistics point toward a broader national trend of increasing cases involving foreign nationals, both as victims and accused persons. Experts say the growth in international travel, migration, and commercial activities in major Indian cities may partly explain the higher numbers being recorded each year.

Delhi, being a major diplomatic and tourism hub, regularly hosts thousands of foreign visitors. As a result, authorities often maintain special monitoring systems and coordination units to address issues involving international citizens.
