Crime – Odisha Police Launch Statewide Crackdown on Illegal Cattle Trade

Crime –  The Odisha Police on Tuesday conducted coordinated raids across several districts as part of a large-scale operation targeting individuals suspected of involvement in illegal cattle transportation. Acting on prior investigations and intelligence inputs, officers carried out searches at dozens of locations believed to be linked to the network.

Extensive Raids Across Multiple Districts

According to senior police officials, simultaneous searches were conducted at nearly 32 locations spanning Balasore, Bhadrak, and Mayurbhanj districts. These sites had been identified during earlier investigations into organized cattle transport activities that authorities say have been ongoing for years.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (Eastern Range), Pinak Mishra, stated that the operation was carefully planned based on evidence collected from multiple cases registered in recent months. The objective, he explained, was to dismantle networks operating across district boundaries.

Large Police Deployment for Operation

The scale of the operation was reflected in the deployment of a significant police force. Officials confirmed that 18 platoons of personnel were involved, along with eight Additional Superintendents of Police, 17 officers of Deputy SP rank, 25 inspectors, and 67 officers at the Sub-Inspector and Assistant Sub-Inspector levels.

Such a coordinated deployment was aimed at ensuring simultaneous action across all identified locations, minimizing the possibility of suspects evading law enforcement. Authorities emphasized that the operation required careful planning and coordination among different units.

Seizures Indicate Organized Network

During the searches, police recovered substantial assets believed to be linked to illegal activities. Officials reported the seizure of more than Rs 50 lakh in cash, along with a significant quantity of gold and silver ornaments. Several vehicles allegedly used for transporting cattle illegally were also taken into custody.

In addition, law enforcement personnel discovered firearms and other weapons at some of the locations. These findings, according to police, suggest that the illegal transportation of cattle was not an isolated activity but part of a structured and organized operation.

Detentions and Ongoing Investigation

Police have detained multiple individuals in connection with the raids. Preliminary reports indicate that around six people were held in Bhadrak, while Balasore and Mayurbhanj each saw the detention of approximately four individuals.

Officials clarified that the investigation is still ongoing and further action may follow based on the evidence gathered during the raids. Authorities are also examining financial transactions and communication records to identify additional links within the network.

Rising Cases Prompt Stronger Action

The crackdown comes amid a noticeable rise in cases related to illegal cattle transportation in the state over the past few years. Official data indicates a steady increase, with hundreds of cases registered annually. This upward trend has prompted authorities to adopt stricter enforcement measures and intensify surveillance.

Police officials reiterated their commitment to a zero-tolerance approach toward such activities. They stated that the current operation was conducted under directives from the state government and senior leadership of the police department, reflecting a broader strategy to curb organized crime.

Focus on Long-Term Enforcement

Authorities have indicated that similar operations may continue in the future as part of sustained efforts to dismantle illegal networks. By targeting both individuals and financial assets, the police aim to weaken the infrastructure supporting such activities.

Officials also stressed the importance of public cooperation in reporting suspicious activities, noting that community input often plays a key role in identifying illegal operations.
