Delhi juvenile crime rise 2024

The NCRB data showed that Delhi continued to report the highest number of juvenile-related offences among major metropolitan cities in the country.

Delhi Leads Among Metropolitan Cities

Among the 19 metropolitan cities included in the NCRB report, Delhi remained at the top of the list for juvenile crime cases. Chennai followed with 466 reported incidents, while Bengaluru recorded 386 cases. Hyderabad reported 316 cases, Ahmedabad 295, Nagpur 283, and Mumbai 258.

Across all 19 metropolitan cities, authorities registered a combined total of 5,050 cases involving juveniles during 2024.

Crimes Against Women and Children

The report highlighted that 134 cases in Delhi were connected to offences against women and children involving juveniles. Officials noted that these figures include a range of criminal activities where minors were allegedly involved either directly or indirectly.

Separate data also revealed that Delhi registered 132 cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act involving juveniles. The numbers indicate continued concern over crimes affecting vulnerable groups in urban areas.

Offences Affecting Human Body Remain Significant

A major share of the cases recorded in Delhi fell under crimes affecting the human body. The NCRB data showed that 569 such incidents were registered during the year.

These included 144 murder cases and 210 cases related to attempted murder. Authorities also documented seven incidents involving death caused by negligence and 41 cases connected to attempts to commit culpable homicide. In addition, there were 147 reported cases of grievous hurt and 19 incidents of kidnapping or abduction involving juveniles.

Property-Related Crimes Form Large Portion

Property-related offences accounted for a substantial portion of juvenile crime cases in Delhi. According to the report, police recorded 1,027 offences linked to property during 2024.

Among these were 217 snatching cases and 195 robbery incidents. The report also mentioned 69 burglary cases, along with 10 incidents each of extortion and dacoity. Besides these, authorities registered two cases associated with forgery, cheating, and fraud involving minors.

Ghaziabad Reports No Cases

While Delhi reported the highest numbers among metropolitan centres, nearby Ghaziabad recorded no juvenile-related cases during the last three years, including 2022, 2023, and 2024, according to the NCRB figures.

The overall data reflects that juvenile crime levels in Delhi have remained relatively stable over recent years, with only a minor year-on-year rise in 2024. Officials and social experts continue to emphasise the importance of preventive measures, awareness programmes, and rehabilitation efforts to address youth involvement in criminal activities.
