Bench Questions Status of the Matter

A three-judge bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath, Justice Sandeep Mehta and Justice Vijay Bishnoi questioned the current status of the petition during the proceedings. The judges asked what issues still remained unresolved in the matter after several years of litigation.

Senior advocate Gaurav Bhatia, who originally filed the plea in 2018, appeared before the court on behalf of the brother of one of the deceased individuals. During the hearing, Bhatia informed the bench that circumstances in the state had changed since the petition was first submitted.

Request Made for July Hearing

During the proceedings, Bhatia requested the court to schedule the matter for hearing in July so that he could obtain additional instructions related to the case. The bench responded by advising proactive efforts to ensure progress in the matter and proper legal follow-up.

The case is connected to allegations surrounding the deaths of three BJP workers after the 2018 local body elections in West Bengal, a period that witnessed intense political tensions and accusations of violence from rival parties. The matter has remained under legal consideration for several years.

Earlier Observation by the Supreme Court

The Supreme Court had earlier raised questions regarding the legal route taken by the petitioner. On February 17, the apex court reportedly asked why the matter had not first been brought before the Calcutta High Court before approaching the Supreme Court directly.

The latest hearing did not involve any detailed discussion on the merits of the allegations. Instead, the focus remained on procedural aspects and the future course of the petition. The court’s decision to hear the matter again in July may provide an opportunity for further submissions from the petitioner’s side.

Political Sensitivity Around the Case

The deaths of political workers in West Bengal have often drawn national attention due to recurring allegations of clashes and violence linked to elections in the state. Various political parties have, over the years, accused opponents of targeting their supporters during local and state-level polls.

However, the Supreme Court has so far limited its observations in this matter to procedural and legal questions. The bench did not issue any fresh directions during Wednesday’s hearing but indicated that the case would be taken up again after the petitioner gathers additional instructions.

Legal experts believe the July hearing could clarify the future direction of the petition and determine whether further judicial intervention will be considered necessary.
