Parliament – Opposition Seeks Revocation of Eight MPs Suspension During Budget Session

Parliament –  The opposition parties have urged the central government and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to reconsider and withdraw the suspension imposed on eight Members of Parliament during the first phase of the ongoing Budget Session. The suspended lawmakers include seven members from the Congress party and one from the CPI-M, who were barred from attending the House over alleged unruly conduct.

Opposition Leaders Meet Parliamentary Affairs Minister

In an effort to resolve the issue, a group of opposition leaders met Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Thursday. The delegation included Congress general secretary K C Venugopal, Samajwadi Party leader Dharmendra Yadav, NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule, DMK MP Kanimozhi, and Trinamool Congress MP Shatabdi Roy.

According to sources within the Congress, the leaders requested the government to intervene and facilitate the restoration of the suspended MPs’ participation in the Lok Sabha. They argued that continued suspension could hinder constructive parliamentary debate during the remainder of the Budget Session.

Sources familiar with the discussion said Rijiju acknowledged their concerns and assured the delegation that he would consult the Speaker regarding the matter.

Issue Raised Again in Business Advisory Committee Meeting

The suspension issue was raised once more during the Business Advisory Committee meeting held on Friday. Congress chief whip K Suresh reportedly brought the matter before Speaker Om Birla and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju during the session.

Participants in the meeting indicated that Rijiju informed opposition members he would return with a response after further discussions and consultations within the government and parliamentary leadership.

As of now, the question of reinstating the suspended lawmakers remains one of the few unresolved issues between the government and opposition parties during the current parliamentary session.

Possible Discussion on West Asia Conflict

While negotiations continue regarding the suspensions, sources indicated that the government may agree to hold a discussion on the ongoing conflict in West Asia and its potential impact on India’s energy security.

The discussion is expected to take place under Rule 193 of the Lok Sabha rules, which allows members to debate an issue without a formal vote. Opposition parties have been pushing for such a discussion to address concerns about global developments affecting India’s economic and strategic interests.

Background of the Suspension

The confrontation between the treasury benches and opposition escalated on February 3 when seven Congress MPs and one CPI-M member were suspended from the Lok Sabha. The disciplinary action followed an incident in which opposition members allegedly tore official papers and threw them toward the Chair during a heated exchange in the House.

The suspension was imposed for the remaining duration of the Budget Session, which is scheduled to conclude on April 2. The decision intensified tensions between the government and opposition parties, with several leaders criticizing the move as excessive.

Suspended Members Continue Protest

The suspended MPs include Gurjeet Singh Aujla, Hibi Eden, C Kiran Kumar Reddy, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, Manickam Tagore, Prashant Padole, and Dean Kuriakose from the Congress, along with CPI-M MP S Ventakesan.

Since their suspension, the lawmakers have staged protests within the Parliament complex. They have been sitting on the steps near Makar Dwar, voicing their objections to the disciplinary action and raising broader political issues.

At various times, senior opposition leaders such as Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi have joined the protesting MPs to express solidarity and highlight their demand for reinstatement.

The ongoing discussions between opposition leaders and the government are expected to determine whether the suspensions will be reconsidered before the Budget Session concludes.
