Monsoon – Southwest Rainfall Expected to Arrive Early Over Kerala
Monsoon – The India Meteorological Department has indicated that the southwest monsoon is expected to make its arrival over Kerala on May 26, offering an early signal for the beginning of the country’s crucial rainy season.

IMD Shares Monsoon Arrival Projection
According to the latest forecast released on Friday by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the onset of the southwest monsoon over Kerala may occur several days before its usual schedule. Officials stated that the expected date could still shift by up to four days on either side, depending on atmospheric conditions and weather developments in the coming days.
The southwest monsoon is one of the most important weather systems for India, as it supplies the majority of the country’s annual rainfall and plays a major role in agriculture, water availability, and overall economic activity.
Kerala Usually Receives Monsoon Around June 1
Under normal climatic conditions, Kerala experiences the first monsoon showers around June 1 each year. From there, the rain-bearing system gradually advances across different parts of the country, eventually covering most regions during the June to September monsoon season.
Meteorologists closely monitor the monsoon’s progress because its timing and intensity directly affect crop sowing, reservoir levels, and power generation in many states. Farmers in several regions also depend heavily on the early arrival of seasonal rains for agricultural planning.
Early Onset Could Influence Farming Activities
An earlier-than-usual monsoon onset may support timely agricultural preparations in southern and central parts of India. Experts often view the arrival date over Kerala as an important indicator of how the broader monsoon season could unfold across the country.
However, weather officials generally caution that the onset date alone does not determine the overall seasonal rainfall performance. Distribution of rainfall over the coming months remains equally important for agriculture and water management.
The IMD regularly tracks sea surface temperatures, wind patterns, and pressure systems before issuing detailed monsoon updates. Additional forecasts regarding rainfall distribution and regional conditions are expected in the coming weeks.
Comparison With Last Year’s Monsoon Arrival
The weather department also pointed out that the southwest monsoon had reached Kerala on May 24 last year, which was earlier than the normal onset date. This year’s projected arrival on May 26 would again place the beginning of the rainy season slightly ahead of the traditional timeline.
India’s monsoon season remains closely watched by policymakers, businesses, and farmers because of its broad influence on food production, inflation trends, and rural demand. A stable and timely monsoon is generally considered beneficial for the agricultural sector, especially in regions heavily dependent on rain-fed farming.
Meteorologists will continue to monitor developments over the Arabian Sea and surrounding regions before confirming the official onset of the monsoon over Kerala later this month.
