Crime – Five Arrested After Cattle Remains Found in Canal
Crime – Authorities in Haryana have taken swift action after disturbing reports emerged of cattle remains being discovered in the Western Yamuna Canal, leading to the arrest of five individuals allegedly linked to an organized illegal operation.

Arrests Follow Local Complaints
The police acted after residents raised concerns about multiple cattle carcasses found floating in the canal over several days. Following an investigation, five suspects were taken into custody late Monday night in the Indri area. Officials identified the main accused as Nakim, a resident of Rana Majra village in Panipat.
The other four arrested individuals include Chand Bagri from Babain in Kurukshetra, along with three brothers—Azam, Nawab, and Shehzad—from Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh. Investigators believe the group was operating together as part of a coordinated cattle trafficking and slaughtering network.
Allegations of Organized Illegal Activity
According to police officials, the accused were allegedly involved in transporting cattle illegally and carrying out slaughtering activities. The remains, including heads and other body parts, were reportedly dumped into the canal in an attempt to dispose of evidence.
The discovery of over 20 cattle remains between March 17 and March 21 sparked widespread concern among local communities. Residents described the situation as alarming, prompting immediate demands for a thorough investigation and strict action.
Police Encounter During Operation
During the operation to apprehend the suspects, law enforcement teams intercepted Nakim and another individual who were reportedly gathering cattle in the Indri region. Officials stated that when asked to surrender, Nakim allegedly opened fire at the police.
The bullet struck a police vehicle, but fortunately, no injuries were reported. Nakim was subsequently overpowered and taken into custody, while his accomplice managed to flee the scene. Efforts are ongoing to trace and arrest the absconding suspect.
Legal Action Initiated
Police have registered a case under the Haryana Gauvansh Sanrakshan and Gausamvardhan Act, 2015, along with relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Authorities confirmed that further investigation is underway to uncover the full extent of the network and identify any additional individuals involved.
Officials indicated that the arrests are part of a broader effort to curb illegal cattle trade activities in the region and ensure strict enforcement of existing laws.
Public Reaction and Protests
The incident triggered strong reactions from local residents and community leaders. A panchayat meeting was convened to address the issue, attended by prominent figures including Sant Gopal Das and former minister Karandev Kamboj.
In the days following the discovery, protests intensified, with locals and cow protection groups staging road blockades and demanding immediate arrests. Demonstrators had issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the authorities, urging swift action against those responsible.
The police response and subsequent arrests appear to have addressed some of the immediate concerns, though community members continue to call for sustained vigilance and preventive measures.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have emphasized that the case remains under active investigation. Efforts are being made to determine whether the arrested individuals were part of a larger network operating across districts or state borders.
Police officials have assured the public that strict action will be taken against anyone found involved in illegal activities related to cattle trafficking and slaughter.
