Walmart – Retailer Announces Ground Beef Cuts Ahead of US 250th Celebration
Walmart – US President Donald Trump said Walmart plans to reduce prices on ground beef and several other products as the United States prepares for its 250th Independence Day celebrations. The announcement was made on Monday local time, with Trump describing the retailer’s move as a response to a request from his administration.

Trump Highlights Planned Grocery Price Reductions
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Walmart had agreed to offer substantial price cuts for shoppers during the national anniversary period. He praised the company as one of the country’s largest retailers and said the discounts would benefit millions of households that regularly buy groceries and household goods from its stores.
Trump said the price of one pound of ground beef would be reduced by nearly 15 per cent, while several other everyday products would also be included in the price-cutting effort. He urged other retailers to consider similar measures, saying lower prices could provide relief to consumers facing continued pressure from food and energy costs.
Walmart Details Summer Rollbacks
Walmart said in a company release that it is offering seasonal rollbacks across its stores and at Sam’s Club. The promotions include lower prices on meat, soft drinks, snacks and summer grilling items, including ribs and other barbecue products.
The retailer said the price of a one-pound package of 73 per cent lean ground beef is expected to fall from USD 6.74 to USD 5.94, a reduction of about 12 per cent. Walmart also confirmed price reductions on selected soda and snack products from major brands including Coca-Cola and PepsiCo.
Sam’s Club is also rolling out markdowns on around 250 products. According to CNN, the discounts include ribs, chicken wings, beef hot dogs and other items commonly purchased during the summer season.
High Beef Prices Continue to Affect Households
The price cuts come as US consumers continue to face high grocery bills, particularly for beef products. Labour Department data showed that ground beef prices rose 12 per cent in May compared with the same month last year, making it one of the faster-rising food categories in the country.
Household budgets have also been affected by elevated fuel costs following military action involving the United States and Israel against Iran in February. The combination of higher food and energy expenses has increased concern about the financial strain on families.
Administration Examines Meat Industry Pricing
The US Department of Justice recently opened an inquiry into the country’s four largest meatpacking companies after Trump called for a review of whether processors had worked together to keep beef prices high.
The administration had also explored the possibility of temporarily removing tariffs on imported beef to increase supply and reduce prices. However, those discussions were paused after objections from cattle producers and several Republican lawmakers.
At the same time, restrictions on cattle imports from Mexico remain in place because of concerns about the New World screwworm parasite. The continued ban has added pressure to domestic beef supplies.
Trump Criticises Biden Over Inflation
During his remarks, Trump blamed former President Joe Biden for rising prices and said his administration was working to reverse inflation-related pressures. He also claimed that oil prices, gasoline costs, egg prices and prescription drug expenses were declining under his government.
Walmart’s latest pricing campaign marks a shift from its position last year, when the company warned that proposed tariffs could lead to higher consumer prices. Trump had criticised the retailer at the time and argued that companies should absorb tariff-related costs instead of passing them on to customers.
Market analysts often view Walmart as an important measure of US consumer spending because of its large customer base. The retailer has recently attracted more middle-income and higher-income shoppers seeking value as food prices and broader inflation concerns remain significant.
