Nicolas Maduro Moros, the president of Venezuela, contacted Guterres on Thursday and urged him to exercise moderation.

A statement issued by Guterres’ office said, “The Secretary-General has received a phone call from H.E. Nicolas Maduro Moros, the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, regarding the current tensions in the region.”

“During the call, the Secretary-General reaffirmed the United Nations’ position on the need for Member States to respect international law, particularly the United Nations Charter, exert restraint and de-escalate tensions to preserve regional stability,” said the statement.

According to CNN, Maduro said today that US President Donald Trump’s accusation that the South American nation had taken US “oil, land and other assets” exposed his actual intentions against the nation.

Trump’s assertion, according to Maduro, demonstrated that the US was really interested in overthrowing the current government and gaining control of Venezuela’s resources and territory. In the past, the US has claimed that its naval force build-up in the region is intended to fight drug trafficking.

We have often said that it is really a colonialist and belligerent pretext, and now everyone is aware of this. “The truth has come to light,” Maduro said.

“The goal in Venezuela is to overthrow the current administration and install a puppet regime that will be overthrown in 47 hours, cede sovereignty, the Constitution, and all of the country’s riches, so transforming Venezuela into a colony. “It will just never happen,” he said, according to CNN.

Trump said on Truth Social on Tuesday that the military will continue to bolster its presence in Venezuela until the US regained “the oil, land, and other assets that they previously stole from us.”

Trump told reporters today that the United States wants the “energy rights” that Venezuela had unlawfully taken away. “Everything we had, including land and oil rights, is being given to us. They removed it because our president may not have been looking. However, they will not do that. We want its return. Our oil rights were taken by them. There, we had a lot of oil. They kicked out our firms, as you are aware, and we want them back.”

In the 1970s, Venezuela placed governmental control over its oil industry. According to CNN, American businesses used to be much more prevalent in its oil fields.
