JapanElection – Takaichi Secures Strong Mandate After LDP Victory
JapanElection – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese have congratulated Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi following a decisive win for the ruling Liberal Democratic Party in Japan’s lower house elections.

Zelenskyy Highlights Global Stability and Japan’s Support
In a message posted on social media platform X, Zelenskyy described the election outcome as a significant achievement. He said the result reflected the need for steady leadership at a time when the international community is seeking stability and a path toward lasting peace.
The Ukrainian leader also acknowledged Japan’s continued backing of Kyiv during Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine. He expressed gratitude for what he called Japan’s principled stance in support of Ukraine’s sovereignty and the protection of its citizens. According to Zelenskyy, Japanese assistance has played a crucial role in safeguarding thousands of lives and helping to rebuild key infrastructure, including energy facilities damaged during the conflict.
Zelenskyy further noted Japan’s participation in international efforts such as the Coalition of the Willing, emphasizing that cooperation between the two countries remains vital. He voiced hope that bilateral collaboration would continue to expand in ways that benefit both nations.
Australia Signals Deeper Strategic Ties
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also extended his congratulations to Takaichi. In his message, Albanese pointed to the increasingly close relationship between Canberra and Tokyo, describing the partnership as stronger than ever.
He said he looked forward to working with Japan’s leadership to broaden cooperation and further strengthen diplomatic, economic, and security ties. Australia and Japan have in recent years deepened collaboration across defense initiatives, trade agreements, and regional security frameworks in the Indo-Pacific.
LDP Achieves Two-Thirds Majority
According to reports from Kyodo News, the Liberal Democratic Party secured a two-thirds majority in the 465-member House of Representatives. The outcome gives Prime Minister Takaichi a commanding position in the lower chamber and provides significant legislative leverage.
Crossing the 310-seat threshold carries major implications under Japan’s parliamentary system. With such numbers, the ruling party can advance legislation even if it encounters resistance in the House of Councillors, the upper chamber where the governing coalition does not hold a majority. The margin also strengthens the government’s ability to pursue constitutional revision, a long-debated issue in Japanese politics.
The scale of the victory represents a sharp rise from the party’s standing before the election, when it held 198 seats. Analysts cited Takaichi’s public appeal and campaign messaging as central factors behind the surge in support.
Coalition Reinforces Governing Bloc
The Liberal Democratic Party’s alliance with the Japan Innovation Party further consolidates control of the lower house. Together, the coalition now commands a dominant presence, reinforcing Takaichi’s authority after assuming office in October.
Political observers note that the result marks a rare milestone in postwar Japan. Achieving a two-thirds majority in the lower chamber provides the government with a broad mandate and reduces immediate legislative uncertainty.
For Prime Minister Takaichi, the outcome offers an opportunity to advance her conservative policy agenda while navigating economic pressures and regional security challenges. At the same time, the strong international response underscores Japan’s importance as a strategic partner for countries including Ukraine and Australia.
As global tensions continue to shape diplomatic priorities, Japan’s new parliamentary configuration is expected to influence both domestic reforms and its role on the international stage.
