Aviation – US Navy Air Show Collision Ends Without Crew Fatalities

Aviation –   Two US Navy fighter jets crashed mid-air during a demonstration flight at the Gunfighter Skies Air Show in Idaho on Sunday, leaving spectators stunned as both aircraft erupted in flames after impact. Officials confirmed that all four crew members escaped safely by ejecting moments before the collision turned catastrophic.

The incident took place during the final day of the annual air show hosted near Mountain Home Air Force Base. Witnesses at the event described seeing the two EA-18G Growler aircraft flying in close formation before they suddenly struck each other in the sky. Within seconds, emergency parachutes became visible as the jets rapidly descended toward the ground.

Dramatic Crash Footage Spreads Online

Videos recorded by attendees quickly circulated across social media platforms, capturing the frightening sequence of events. In the footage, the aircraft can be seen colliding mid-flight before breaking apart. Thick black smoke later rose from the crash site after both jets hit the ground and burst into flames.

The rapid ejection of the pilots and crew members likely prevented a far more tragic outcome. According to US Navy officials, all four individuals involved in the accident survived and were reported to be in stable condition following the crash. Emergency responders rushed to the scene within moments to assist the aircrew and secure the surrounding area.

Air Show Cancelled Following Incident

Authorities immediately halted the remaining performances scheduled for the day after the crash occurred. Organisers also restricted access around the site while military officials and investigators began examining the cause of the collision.

The Gunfighter Skies Air Show had drawn large crowds over the weekend, featuring demonstrations from military aviation units and aerial performance teams. The collision happened during the second and concluding day of the event, forcing organisers to end the program earlier than planned.

Military Officials Praise Emergency Response Teams

Colonel David R. Gunter, commander of the 366th Fighter Wing, expressed relief that no lives were lost in the incident. He praised the swift actions of emergency personnel, including local city and county agencies, for responding quickly and ensuring public safety after the crash.

He also thanked visitors and participants for remaining calm and cooperative during the emergency situation. Officials noted that securing the site and protecting spectators became the immediate priority once the aircraft went down.

Investigation Focuses on Cause of Collision

A formal investigation has now been launched to determine what caused the two military jets to collide during the aerial demonstration. Aviation experts are expected to review flight data, communication records, pilot coordination procedures and weather conditions as part of the inquiry.

The aircraft involved were identified as EA-18G Growlers assigned to an electronic attack squadron based in Washington state. The Navy has previously described the Growler as one of its advanced airborne electronic warfare platforms used for radar jamming and tactical support operations.

Each of the aircraft is estimated to be worth approximately $67 million, highlighting the scale of the financial loss in addition to the seriousness of the incident. Despite the destruction of both jets, military officials emphasised that the safe survival of all crew members remained the most important outcome.

The investigation is expected to continue over the coming weeks as authorities work to establish the exact sequence of events that led to the collision during the high-profile aviation event.
