Rainfall – Heavy Showers and Strong Winds Forecast for Parts of Tamil Nadu
Rainfall – Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds is expected to affect several parts of Tamil Nadu over the next few days, with the India Meteorological Department forecasting intense rainfall in a few districts while many others are likely to receive moderate showers.
Heavy Rain Alert for Four Districts
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rainfall for Coimbatore, Theni, Tirunelveli, and the hill regions of the Nilgiris on Thursday and Friday. Weather experts said the changing conditions are being driven by a weak cyclonic circulation in the lower layers of the atmosphere over the northern coastal belt of Tamil Nadu.
This weather system is expected to strengthen rainfall activity across the state, particularly in districts located along the Western Ghats and nearby regions. Gusty winds may accompany periods of heavy rain, especially in elevated and hilly areas.
Residents Asked to Stay Cautious
Officials have advised people living in vulnerable locations, including hill stations and ghat roads, to remain cautious as weather conditions could change rapidly. Travellers heading towards rain-prone areas have also been urged to monitor local weather updates before planning their journeys.
Authorities expect intermittent heavy spells to continue through Friday, increasing the possibility of waterlogging in low-lying areas and reduced visibility on roads during intense showers.
Rainfall Likely to Continue Into the Weekend
According to the latest forecast, the wet weather is likely to persist on Saturday as well. Theni, Tenkasi, and Tirunelveli districts may witness isolated spells of heavy rainfall during the day.
Meanwhile, several other districts are expected to receive moderate rain until Sunday. These include Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Ranipet, Vellore, Tirupattur, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Tiruchirappalli, Karur, and Madurai.
Scattered light showers are also likely in other parts of Tamil Nadu as moisture-rich winds and favourable local atmospheric conditions continue to support rainfall across the state.
Chennai Expected to Receive Evening Showers
For Chennai, the forecast indicates partly cloudy skies with moderate rain likely in a few areas during Thursday evening or night. The city is expected to record a maximum temperature of around 36 degrees Celsius.
Although the rainfall could bring temporary relief from the prevailing heat and humidity, daytime conditions are expected to remain warm. Residents may experience brief cooling during rain spells, but overall temperatures are likely to stay close to seasonal averages.
Temperature to Remain Near Seasonal Normal
The Meteorological Department has stated that maximum temperatures across Tamil Nadu and neighbouring Puducherry are expected to remain near normal for this time of the year.
Rainfall over the coming days is expected to remain concentrated mainly along the Western Ghats, parts of northern Tamil Nadu, and several interior districts. Elsewhere, isolated light showers are likely as favourable atmospheric conditions continue to influence weather patterns across the state.
