Rail Connectivity – New Agartala-Karimganj MEMU Service Begins Daily Operations
Rail Connectivity – Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha inaugurated the Agartala-Karimganj-Agartala MEMU train service on Saturday, marking a new addition to daily rail travel between Tripura and Assam. The service was flagged off from Agartala Railway Station and is expected to make routine travel easier for passengers moving between the two states.

Daily service expected to assist regular travellers
The newly introduced MEMU train will operate every day and is likely to support a large number of commuters, including office employees, traders, students and business travellers. For many passengers, the route is expected to offer a more dependable travel option between Agartala and Karimganj, reducing dependence on road transport for regular journeys.
Residents in parts of Tripura and Assam have welcomed the service, as demands for stronger rail connectivity along the route had been raised for several years. The train is expected to improve access for people travelling for work, trade, education and personal commitments.
Officials attend launch at Agartala station
Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee, District Magistrate Vishal Kumar and other officials attended the launch programme at Agartala Railway Station. The event highlighted the role of rail expansion in strengthening movement of people and goods across the northeastern region.
The MEMU service is expected to contribute to closer links between Tripura and southern Assam, particularly for passengers who travel frequently between Agartala and Karimganj. Local businesses may also benefit from smoother movement across the route as the service becomes part of the daily transport network.
Road projects reviewed with Union minister
Earlier this week, Chief Minister Saha held a meeting in New Delhi with Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari to review National Highway works and discuss future infrastructure plans for Tripura.
The discussions covered the pace of ongoing highway projects, maintenance requirements on existing roads and proposals aimed at improving road links within the state and with neighbouring regions. Saha thanked the Union government for expanding the National Highway network in Tripura, which he said had increased from 198 kilometres in 2014 to 923 kilometres in 2026.
NH-08 expansion plan receives attention
A key issue discussed during the meeting was the proposed four-laning of the 130-kilometre Churaibari-Champaknagar stretch of NH-08. The alignment has been approved by the ministry after consultation with the Tripura government.
The planned greenfield highway will run alongside the railway line and include tunnels through the Atharamura and Longtharai hill ranges. Land acquisition for the project is expected to begin shortly, according to the state government.
Focus on monsoon safety along highways
Saha also stressed the importance of stronger drainage arrangements and retaining walls along National Highways. Such measures are being considered to reduce flooding in nearby settlements and limit landslide risks in hilly areas during the monsoon.
The state government’s recent focus on rail and road infrastructure reflects its broader effort to improve regional access, support economic activity and provide safer travel facilities for residents across Tripura.
