Delhi Weather – Morning Showers Bring Relief as Monsoon Nears NCR

Delhi Weather –  Light rain and isolated thunderstorms swept across several parts of Delhi on Thursday morning, easing the discomfort caused by recent heat and high humidity. The showers, accompanied by light winds, brought a noticeable change in weather conditions in the national capital after days of oppressive warmth.

Humidity Remains High Despite Cooler Morning Conditions

The India Meteorological Department said early morning temperatures in Delhi stayed between 28°C and 29°C, while humidity levels rose as high as 95 per cent. Although the rain provided temporary relief, moisture in the air continued to make conditions feel uncomfortable in some areas.

Weather officials expect the maximum temperature on Thursday to remain between 32°C and 34°C. Light rain, cloudy skies and gusty winds may continue in parts of the city during the day, depending on the movement of weather systems over the region.

Delhi Air Quality Shows Minor Improvement After Rainfall

Rainfall also helped improve air quality in Delhi, with the Air Quality Index recorded at 79. The reading falls under the moderate category, indicating better conditions compared with periods when dust and pollutants remain trapped in the atmosphere during dry weather.

The improvement came as showers helped settle suspended particles in the air. However, air quality can change quickly depending on wind direction, traffic emissions and rainfall intensity across Delhi and nearby areas.

Day Temperatures Drop From Earlier Heatwave Levels

Delhi had already seen a decline in daytime temperatures on Wednesday. The maximum temperature ranged from 33°C to 34.8°C, a considerable reduction from the intense heatwave conditions experienced earlier in the season.

The fall in temperature has been linked to increasing cloud cover and the gradual arrival of monsoon-related weather activity in northern parts of the country. Residents are likely to see more frequent spells of rain as the monsoon advances.

Monsoon Expected to Expand Across Northern States

The IMD has said that the southwest monsoon is likely to move further into several parts of North India in the coming days. Punjab, Haryana, Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh and sections of Gujarat’s western coast are expected to receive wider monsoon coverage soon.

Senior IMD scientist Naresh Yadav said weather conditions are becoming favourable for the monsoon to spread into additional regions. The expected progress could bring broader rainfall activity and further relief from high temperatures across the northern plains.

Heavy Rain Alerts Issued for Western and Central India

The weather department has issued a yellow alert for parts of western and central India where heavy rainfall may occur. Authorities have advised people in vulnerable areas to remain alert, particularly in locations prone to waterlogging, flooding or disruption to road travel.

A red alert has also been issued for the Konkan region, Goa and South Gujarat, where extremely heavy rainfall is expected over the next four to five days. Very heavy rain is also likely in Odisha and parts of central India as weather systems strengthen over the region.

Punjab and Haryana Begin Receiving Monsoon Showers

In Chandigarh, IMD Director Surinder Paul said the monsoon has already reached parts of Punjab and Haryana. Several districts have reported rainfall, signalling the seasonal system’s continued movement across the region.

He said the monsoon is likely to cover the remaining areas of Punjab and Haryana within the next two to three days. Widespread showers are expected to reduce daytime heat and provide relief from humid conditions in the affected districts.
