Travel Safety – Indian Student Describes Disturbing Encounter Near South Korean University

Travel Safety –  An Indian student pursuing higher education in South Korea has drawn widespread attention after recounting an unsettling incident that occurred while she was walking to her university. Through a video posted online, she explained that an unfamiliar man driving a car stopped beside her and asked where he could find nearby restaurants. Although the question appeared ordinary at first, she found it unusual because the man was Korean and seemed unfamiliar with a location close to the university. She politely directed him toward restaurants located near the East Gate before continuing on her way.

Stranger Continued to Pressure Student

According to the student, the interaction quickly became uncomfortable when the man repeatedly asked her to accompany him and personally guide him to the restaurants. He reportedly moved closer to his vehicle and encouraged her to get inside. She declined the request, explaining that she already had other commitments. Despite her refusal, the man continued asking when she would be available and questioned why she did not have a job outside her studies, making the conversation increasingly unsettling.

Second Encounter Raised Greater Concerns

The student said the situation became even more alarming when she encountered the same individual again at a later time. This time, she claimed, he appeared to be wearing a wig in what seemed like an attempt to disguise himself. Despite the changed appearance, he allegedly repeated the same questions about nearby restaurants and once again tried to engage her in conversation. The repeated interaction left her feeling anxious and unsafe.

Video Sparks Discussion on Personal Safety

Sharing her experience online, the student described the encounters as frightening and said the man’s repeated attempts to persuade her to accompany him made her deeply uncomfortable. Her video quickly spread across social media platforms, prompting conversations about the safety challenges that international students, particularly young women, may encounter while living abroad. Many users also stressed the importance of trusting one’s instincts and avoiding situations that feel suspicious.

Online Reactions Reflected Mixed Opinions

The incident generated significant discussion across social media, with users expressing a wide range of opinions. Some questioned the idealized image of South Korea that is often shaped by entertainment content, while others shared their own experiences of living or studying in the country.

One commenter referred to previous online discussions praising South Korea and suggested that such incidents should encourage a more balanced understanding of life abroad. Another user criticized what they perceived as social issues within the country, mentioning concerns related to racism and gender attitudes.

Several people also posted personal accounts from their time in South Korea. One individual recalled living there nearly a decade ago, stating that similar incidents were often overlooked by members of the international community. Another commenter argued that popular Korean dramas and K-pop culture can sometimes create unrealistic expectations about everyday life, encouraging viewers to separate entertainment from real-world experiences.

While many reactions reflected personal viewpoints rather than verified facts, the discussion has reinforced the importance of public awareness, personal safety, and remaining alert when interacting with strangers, regardless of the country or city one is visiting or living in.
