Acclaimed Filmmakers and Editors on the Invite List
Celebrated filmmaker, writer, and composer Vishal Bhardwaj is among the most prominent Indian names selected this year. Renowned for directing critically acclaimed films such as Maqbool, Omkara, and Haider, Bhardwaj has made a lasting contribution to Indian cinema through his distinctive storytelling and music.
The Academy has also invited veteran film editors A. Sreekar Prasad and Deepa Bhatia. Prasad, whose career spans more than four decades, has earned multiple National Film Awards and is recognized for editing landmark productions including RRR, Dil Chahta Hai, and Saathiya. Bhatia is respected for her work on films such as Taare Zameen Par, Rock On!!, My Name Is Khan, and Kai Po Che, which have received widespread appreciation from audiences and critics alike.
Representation Across Multiple Film Disciplines
The list of Indian invitees extends beyond directing and editing. Costume designer Eka Lakhani, casting director Dilip Shankar, and documentary filmmaker Shalini Kantayya have also been selected for Academy membership. Each of them has built a strong reputation through consistent contributions in their respective fields.
In addition, several professionals associated with Indian cinema have received invitations across specialized branches. These include Avneet Kaur in Animation, Farah Khan and Rajesh Ramachandran in Production and Technology, along with Becky Graham and Jay Mehta in the Visual Effects category. Their selection reflects the increasing global recognition of technical and creative expertise connected to India’s film industry.
Membership Brings Oscar Voting Rights
Professionals who accept the Academy’s invitation and complete the membership process, including payment of the required dues, will become part of an organization comprising more than 11,000 members worldwide. Membership provides full voting rights for the Academy Awards, allowing members to participate in selecting Oscar nominees and winners.
The Academy is divided into 17 professional branches covering various aspects of filmmaking, including directing, acting, editing, music, costume design, documentary filmmaking, casting, production technology, and several other disciplines. Each invitee joins the branch that matches their professional expertise. During the nominations stage, members generally vote within their own branch, while all eligible members participate in selecting nominees for the Best Picture category. In the final round of Oscar voting, members are entitled to cast ballots across every award category.
Academy Continues to Expand International Participation
The latest membership class demonstrates the Academy’s continued commitment to increasing international representation within its organization. According to Academy Chief Executive Officer Bill Kramer and Academy President Lynette Howell Taylor, the 2026 invitees have been chosen in recognition of their dedication to filmmaking and their meaningful contributions to the global motion picture industry.
The Academy also revealed that 53 percent of this year’s invitees come from countries outside the United States. If every invitation is accepted, total Academy membership will increase to 11,319, including 10,338 members who are eligible to vote in the Oscars, further strengthening the organization’s diverse international representation.
