Uniform Civil Code – The Rajasthan government has taken a significant step toward introducing a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) by setting up a committee tasked with preparing a draft framework for the proposed legislation.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government in Rajasthan has constituted a five-member panel under the leadership of former Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai. The committee has been entrusted with studying various aspects of the proposed Uniform Civil Code and preparing recommendations for its implementation in the state.
Government Highlights Focus on Equal Rights
According to Parliamentary Affairs Minister Jawahar Singh Bedham, the existing legal framework contains different personal laws for various religious communities, particularly in matters affecting family and civil rights. He stated that such variations often result in unequal treatment and can impact the rights of women.
The minister said the proposed Uniform Civil Code is aimed at creating a more balanced legal structure that promotes equality and strengthens the social and legal standing of women across communities. He added that the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring fairness in civil matters.
Common Rules for Civil Matters
The proposed legislation is expected to introduce a uniform set of rules governing key civil issues such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, succession, and adoption. If implemented, these provisions would apply to all residents of Rajasthan regardless of their religion, caste, or community background.
Officials have indicated that the objective is not to impose a legal framework without consultation but to create a transparent and inclusive process that takes into account the views of different sections of society.
Committee to Hold Public Interactions Across Rajasthan
To gather opinions and recommendations from citizens, the committee will travel to divisional headquarters across the state. During these visits, members will interact with residents, social organisations, legal professionals, academic experts, and representatives from various communities.
The consultations are expected to play an important role in shaping the draft, as the government seeks broad participation before finalising any recommendations. Authorities believe that engaging directly with stakeholders will help address concerns and ensure that different perspectives are considered during the drafting process.
Digital Platform for Citizen Suggestions
In addition to in-person consultations, the state government plans to launch a dedicated website through which citizens can submit their views and suggestions regarding the proposed Uniform Civil Code.
The online platform is intended to make the consultation process more accessible and encourage wider public participation. Feedback received through the website will be reviewed by the committee as part of its efforts to prepare a comprehensive draft.
The formation of the panel marks the beginning of Rajasthan’s formal process toward examining a common civil law framework. The committee’s findings and recommendations are expected to guide the government in determining the future course of action on the issue.
