ClimateAction – India Reaffirms Global Climate Role Amid Rising Heatwave Concerns
ClimateAction – India has reiterated its commitment to supporting global efforts against climate change, with Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav emphasizing that the country continues to play a constructive role in addressing environmental challenges. Speaking on Friday, he highlighted that several national campaigns focused on sustainability and ecological responsibility are helping strengthen public participation in climate action while addressing emerging concerns such as extreme heat conditions.

Climate Change Linked to Increasing Heatwave Events
During an interaction with the media, Yadav pointed to the broader global causes behind the intense heatwaves being experienced in Delhi and several other regions. He explained that rising temperatures are the outcome of decades of human-driven environmental changes, including increased greenhouse gas emissions, industrial growth, and expanding transportation networks across the world.
According to the minister, heatwaves should not be viewed as isolated local events but as part of a larger climate pattern that has developed over many decades. He stressed that governments across the globe must work collectively to address the long-term environmental consequences of carbon-intensive development.
India Highlights Progress on Climate Commitments
Yadav said India remains dedicated to international climate goals and has demonstrated measurable progress in meeting its commitments. He noted that the country successfully achieved its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) well ahead of the originally planned timeline, reflecting a strong commitment toward reducing environmental impacts while pursuing economic development.
The minister added that India’s climate strategy focuses not only on policy implementation but also on encouraging greater public participation in sustainable practices. He said environmental responsibility must become part of everyday life for long-term success in combating climate challenges.
Public Awareness Campaigns Receive Government Focus
Highlighting ongoing outreach efforts, Yadav referred to initiatives such as Mission LiFE and the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign. These programs are designed to encourage citizens to adopt environmentally conscious habits and contribute directly to conservation efforts.
He explained that awareness-building remains a critical component of climate action, as individual choices can collectively support national and global sustainability objectives. Through community engagement and educational efforts, the government aims to strengthen public understanding of environmental protection and resource conservation.
Measures Underway to Address Delhi’s Air Quality Challenges
The minister also discussed efforts being undertaken to tackle seasonal air pollution in the national capital. He stated that authorities have been working on coordinated strategies to manage both air quality concerns and climate-related issues through long-term planning and inter-state cooperation.
Yadav pointed to the establishment of the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), which has been tasked with improving coordination among various stakeholders. He said action plans have been developed in partnership with neighboring states to address pollution sources more effectively.
In addition, he mentioned that the Delhi government is expected to advance environmental initiatives, including a Green Delhi campaign aimed at improving ecological conditions across the city.
Dust Reduction and Green Cover Expansion Planned
Addressing one of the major contributors to pollution, the minister identified dust as a significant factor affecting Delhi’s air quality. To counter this issue, authorities are preparing extensive dust-control measures, including deep-cleaning operations in key areas before the winter season.
He also outlined plans to increase vegetation across open spaces in the National Capital Region (NCR). Forest departments and local authorities have been encouraged to undertake large-scale plantation activities, including the planting of shrubs and other greenery in vacant land parcels.
Yadav expressed confidence that these efforts, combined with seasonal rainfall, would help increase green cover and reduce exposed soil surfaces, contributing to improved environmental conditions in the months ahead.
