RailwayStation – A section of the roofing structure above Platform No. 5 at Lucknow’s Charbagh Railway Station gave way on Friday morning, leaving three people injured and causing temporary disruption to railway operations. The incident occurred at around 8 a.m. while redevelopment activities were being carried out at the station under an ongoing modernization project overseen by railway authorities.

Charbagh platform shed collapse

Panic at Platform as Structure Falls

According to officials, a portion of the tin-covered shed spanning Platforms 4 and 5 suddenly collapsed onto the passenger area. The unexpected incident created panic among travelers who were waiting for scheduled train services. Railway Protection Force personnel and station staff responded immediately, helping those trapped or injured and arranging medical assistance without delay.

The affected section of the platform was briefly closed to ensure passenger safety and to allow emergency teams to assess the situation. Railway workers soon began removing debris and inspecting nearby structures to prevent further risks.

Injured Passengers Shifted for Medical Care

Authorities confirmed that three individuals, including passengers and a train ticket examiner, suffered injuries in the collapse. All injured persons were transported to a nearby hospital, where they received treatment. Officials stated that their condition was being monitored and necessary medical support was being provided.

Among those injured was Abhishek Balmiki, who had arrived at the station with friends for a journey to Haridwar. Recalling the incident, he said that the group had been waiting on Platform 5 because their train was running late. Without warning, the overhead shed collapsed, leaving several people scrambling for safety.

Redevelopment Work Underway at Station

Railway officials revealed that the damaged shed had already been identified for removal as part of the station’s ongoing redevelopment plan. While Platform 4 had been closed for modernization work, Platform 5 remained operational for passenger movement at the time of the incident.

Officials added that several travelers were waiting for the Howrah-Doon Express when the structure fell. An inquiry has been initiated to determine the exact circumstances that led to the collapse and to assess whether additional safety measures are required during construction activities.

Focus on Passenger Safety Measures

The incident has once again highlighted the challenges involved in carrying out large-scale infrastructure upgrades while maintaining regular railway operations. Authorities are expected to review safety arrangements around active construction zones to reduce risks for passengers and railway employees.

Railway officials assured travelers that necessary inspections would be conducted and that work would continue in accordance with safety standards. Services on the affected platform were gradually restored after initial clearance operations were completed.

Separate Bridge Collapse Raises Safety Concerns

The platform accident occurred a day after another serious infrastructure-related incident in Uttar Pradesh. On Thursday night, an under-construction bridge over the Betwa River in Hamirpur district collapsed during severe weather conditions, resulting in the deaths of at least six workers. Officials indicated that the number of casualties could increase as rescue operations continue.

Chief Minister Orders Immediate Action

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences to the families affected by the Hamirpur bridge tragedy and directed officials to accelerate rescue and relief efforts. The Chief Minister’s Office stated that senior officers were instructed to reach the site promptly and coordinate operations with emergency response teams.

In addition, directions were issued to ensure proper medical treatment for injured workers and to provide compensation and support to the families of those who lost their lives. Rescue teams continue to work at the site as authorities assess the extent of the damage and investigate the cause of the collapse.
