Diplomacy – Rubio Reaffirms US Support for India Amid Racism Debate
Diplomacy – The United States has reiterated its commitment to maintaining strong ties with India while distancing itself from racist remarks aimed at Indians living in America.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday clarified his earlier remarks regarding racist comments targeting Indians in the United States, saying his statements were mainly directed at online abuse and social media behaviour. Speaking after his visit to New Delhi, Rubio explained that many offensive comments circulating online may come from anonymous users, internet trolls, or automated accounts rather than reflecting mainstream American opinion.
Rubio Explains Earlier Remarks
Rubio had earlier sparked discussion after saying that “people say stupid stuff” while responding to questions about racism faced by Indians in the US. On Monday, he elaborated on the context of those comments and stressed that social media often amplifies irresponsible or hateful content.
According to Rubio, online platforms across the world frequently witness harmful and insensitive remarks, and the United States is no exception. He noted that such behaviour should not be considered representative of American society as a whole.
The US Secretary of State also underlined that the country continues to welcome immigrants and international communities from around the world. He stated that isolated racist comments made by individuals should not define the image or values of the nation.
Strong Emphasis on India-US Partnership
During his interaction with journalists, Rubio highlighted the importance of the relationship between Washington and New Delhi. He said the American administration values India as a major global partner and pointed to the close relationship between US leadership and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Rubio stated that the US President holds India in high regard and supports deeper engagement with the country in strategic, economic, and diplomatic areas. He also mentioned that senior American officials appointed to India share the administration’s commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation.
The remarks came during Rubio’s official engagements in India, where discussions focused on regional stability, security cooperation, and broader international partnerships.
Racism Question Raised in New Delhi
The issue of racist incidents involving Indians in the United States was first raised during a joint press briefing alongside India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in New Delhi on Sunday.
At the time, Rubio strongly defended America’s identity as a multicultural and immigrant-friendly country. He acknowledged concerns related to discrimination but maintained that hateful comments by a small number of individuals do not reflect the broader character of the United States.
Rubio added that America’s diversity remains one of its defining strengths and said millions of immigrants continue to contribute positively to the country’s social and economic growth.
Discussion on Pakistan and Iran Situation
During the media interaction, Rubio was also asked whether India had raised concerns over Pakistan’s role in relation to tensions involving Iran and the United States. In response, he said the matter did not come up during discussions with Indian officials.
However, Rubio acknowledged India’s longstanding concerns about terrorist groups operating from Pakistani territory. He noted that India has consistently expressed security concerns regarding cross-border terrorism affecting the region.
At the same time, Rubio clarified that India’s concerns regarding Pakistan are separate from any diplomatic efforts connected to the Iran situation.
India Described as Key Strategic Ally
When questioned about comparisons between his visits to India and China, Rubio described both nations as globally significant but placed special emphasis on India’s democratic system and strategic importance to the United States.
He referred to India as the world’s most populous democracy and an important partner for Washington in the Indo-Pacific region. Rubio said cooperation between the two countries continues to expand across defence, trade, technology, and regional security matters.
The visit further highlighted ongoing efforts by both countries to strengthen diplomatic coordination amid changing global political and economic dynamics.
