China Relations – India’s newly appointed Ambassador to China, Vikram Doraiswami, has officially begun his diplomatic responsibilities in Beijing after presenting copies of his credentials to senior Chinese officials. The formal process marks an important step in his assignment at a time when both nations continue efforts to maintain communication on key bilateral matters.
Formal Presentation of Credentials in Beijing
The Indian Embassy in Beijing confirmed that Ambassador Vikram Doraiswami handed over copies of his credentials to Hong Lei, Assistant Foreign Minister and Director-General of the Protocol Department at China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The ceremony was held in Beijing on May 7 and represented the official beginning of his diplomatic engagement with the Chinese administration.
The embassy shared details of the event through an official statement, noting that the interaction followed established diplomatic procedures for newly appointed envoys taking charge in foreign countries.
Ambassador Pays Tribute to Gandhi and Tagore
Before beginning formal diplomatic meetings, Doraiswami visited the Jintai Art Museum in Chaoyang Park, where he offered floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi. The event was attended by museum curator Yuan Xikun, who accompanied the Indian envoy during the visit.
The ambassador also paid respects to Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore at the Indian Embassy in Beijing. The gesture reflected India’s emphasis on cultural heritage and historical ties while initiating a new diplomatic chapter in China.
Arrival in China Marked by Official Reception
Upon reaching Beijing earlier this week, Doraiswami was welcomed by senior representatives from both India and China. India’s Charge d’Affaires Angeline Premalatha received the ambassador alongside Li Jianbo, Deputy Director of the Asia Department in China’s foreign ministry.
The reception highlighted the formal nature of the transition as Doraiswami assumed responsibility for one of India’s most significant diplomatic postings.
Credentials Issued by President Droupadi Murmu
Prior to departing for Beijing, Doraiswami received his official credentials from President Droupadi Murmu. The presentation took place last week and formally authorized him to represent India as Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China.
The Indian Embassy had announced the development through social media, describing the appointment as an important diplomatic responsibility amid evolving regional and global discussions involving both countries.
Discussions on Bilateral and Strategic Issues
Before leaving for China, Doraiswami also met Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi. According to official information, the interaction included discussions on regional strategic developments, bilateral engagement mechanisms, and ongoing sensitivities in India-China relations.
The meeting came at a time when both nations continue diplomatic and military-level communication to maintain stability along the border and improve institutional dialogue.
