CrimeAgainstSeniorCitizens – Delhi Reports Highest Elderly Crime Cases Among Metro Cities
CrimeAgainstSeniorCitizens – Delhi recorded the highest number of crimes against senior citizens among 19 metropolitan cities in 2024, according to the latest data released by the National Crime Records Bureau. The national capital registered 1,267 cases involving people aged above 60 years, highlighting continuing concerns over the safety and security of elderly residents in urban areas.

Slight Decline Compared to Previous Years
Although Delhi remained at the top of the list, the latest figures indicate a small reduction in such offences compared to earlier years. The city had reported 1,361 cases in 2023 and 1,313 incidents in 2022. The recent decline suggests some improvement, but the numbers continue to remain significantly high when compared to other metropolitan regions.
Mumbai recorded the second-highest number of crimes against senior citizens with 791 cases, while Bengaluru followed with 660 cases during the same period. The NCRB statistics underline the growing vulnerability of elderly residents in major urban centres where many senior citizens live alone or depend heavily on external support systems.
Range of Offences Reported in Delhi
The data revealed that the offences reported in Delhi covered a wide spectrum of crimes. Among the registered cases were two incidents of rape, 20 cases involving assault or criminal force intended to outrage modesty, and two instances of sexual harassment. Authorities also recorded 15 murder cases and three cases of attempted murder involving senior citizens. Additionally, four incidents of kidnapping or abduction were reported during the year.
Property-related crimes formed a substantial portion of the total cases. Theft remained the most commonly reported offence, accounting for 385 incidents. Snatching cases stood at 53, while robbery-related complaints reached 31. Officials also recorded 14 extortion cases and 12 incidents linked to criminal trespass. Another major category involved financial offences, with 227 cases related to forgery, cheating, and fraud targeting elderly residents.
Delhi Police Expanding Senior Citizen Support Measures
Efforts to improve protection mechanisms for senior citizens have been underway in the capital for several years. Earlier reports indicated that the Delhi Police had added more than 7,000 new senior citizens to its monitoring and support network by September last year. This pushed the total number of registered elderly residents under police outreach programmes to 56,981 across Delhi.
Police officials have also been working on upgrading a dedicated application designed for senior citizens. The proposed improvements are expected to help elderly residents monitor visits by local beat officers and provide quicker grievance redressal support. Authorities believe that technology-based monitoring systems can strengthen communication between senior citizens and law enforcement agencies.
Dedicated Security Cell Monitoring Elderly Safety
According to police officials, a specialised senior citizens’ security cell was established at the police headquarters on June 22, 2004. The unit was created to centrally supervise matters linked to the protection and welfare of elderly residents in the national capital. While district-level schemes were already operational at the time, officials decided to introduce a central monitoring system under the supervision of the crime branch for better coordination and response.
The NCRB figures once again draw attention to the security challenges faced by elderly residents in metropolitan cities. Experts believe increasing awareness, stronger community support, and faster police response systems will remain essential in reducing crimes targeting senior citizens in the coming years.
