Education Safety – A tragic shooting incident at a school in northeastern Brazil on Tuesday claimed the lives of two staff members and left two others injured, including a student, according to local authorities and eyewitness accounts.

The attack took place at the Sao Jose Institute in Rio Branco, the capital city of Acre state. Officials confirmed that a 13-year-old boy was taken into custody shortly after the incident. Authorities have not yet clarified whether the suspect was currently enrolled at the school or had previously studied there.
Panic Spreads as Students Attempt to Escape
Witnesses described scenes of fear and confusion as gunfire erupted inside the school premises. Several students reportedly tried to flee by climbing onto rooftops and attempting to cross a wall separating the school from a nearby hotel.
Eduardo Rodrigues Cavalcante, a receptionist working at the neighboring hotel, said students were desperately searching for a safe place to hide during the attack.
According to the 19-year-old witness, only one student managed to jump over the approximately six-meter-high wall and enter the hotel for protection. Others remained stranded on the roof while trying to escape the danger.
He also recalled hearing repeated gunshots followed by loud screams coming from the school building.
Victims and Emergency Response
Local media footage showed emergency teams transporting an injured woman on a stretcher while distressed students, parents, and staff gathered outside the campus. Many people were seen crying and comforting one another after the violence unfolded.
Authorities confirmed that two school employees lost their lives in the shooting. Two additional people suffered injuries, including one student. Officials have not yet released detailed information about the conditions of those injured.
Police officers quickly secured the area after the shooting and began an investigation to determine the motive behind the attack and the sequence of events leading up to it.
Guardian Also Taken Into Custody
The Acre state government stated that the firearm allegedly used in the shooting belonged to the suspect’s legal guardian. As part of the investigation, the guardian was also arrested by police.
Law enforcement agencies are now examining how the weapon was accessed and whether there were any warning signs before the attack occurred.
Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing, and more details are expected to emerge in the coming days.
State Government Announces Support Measures
Following the incident, the Acre state administration expressed sympathy for the victims and their families. Officials also extended condolences to the school community and education professionals affected by the tragedy.
To support students and teachers dealing with emotional trauma, psychological assistance teams have been deployed across the region. In addition, all schools in Acre state will remain closed for three days as a precautionary and mourning measure.
The government emphasized the importance of providing mental health support to those impacted by the violence.
