Election – BJP Gains Strong Lead in Tripura Dharmanagar Bypoll Results
Election – The counting of votes in the Dharmanagar Assembly by-election in Tripura has shown a decisive trend, with the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Jahar Chakraborty moving significantly ahead of his closest rival. Early figures indicate a comfortable margin that continued to widen as counting progressed on Monday.

Early Counting Shows Clear Advantage
As per the latest figures released during the counting process, Chakraborty secured 18,754 votes by the end of the third round. His nearest competitor, Congress candidate Chayan Bhattacharya, trailed with 4,766 votes. Meanwhile, CPI(M) nominee Amitabha Dutta stood in third position with 4,371 votes. The substantial gap between the leading candidate and others suggests a strong mandate in favour of the BJP in this by-election.
The counting exercise began at 8 am and followed a structured process, with each round adding clarity to the emerging outcome. Election officials ensured that all electronic voting machines were transported and handled according to established guidelines.
Tight Security Measures at Counting Centre
Authorities maintained strict security arrangements at the counting venue in North Tripura. Officials confirmed that preventive restrictions were imposed within a 100-metre radius around the centre to avoid any untoward incidents. Senior police personnel were present on-site to supervise the arrangements and ensure smooth operations.
The deployment included adequate forces to manage crowd control and maintain order throughout the counting process. Officials noted that all necessary precautions were taken to uphold transparency and safety during the exercise.
Multi-Cornered Contest with Clear Front-Runner
Although a total of six candidates contested the by-election, the primary contest was widely seen as a three-way fight among the BJP, Congress, and CPI(M). Other candidates participated but did not appear to influence the main electoral dynamics significantly.
From the early rounds itself, Chakraborty established a commanding lead, which continued to expand as more votes were counted. Political observers noted that such margins in early rounds often indicate a consistent voting pattern across polling stations.
Background of the By-Election
The bypoll was conducted following the passing of former Tripura Assembly Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen in December 2025. His death left the Dharmanagar seat vacant, necessitating the by-election.
Polling for the seat took place on April 9 and recorded a voter turnout of 79.84 percent. The high participation reflected strong public engagement in the electoral process, with voters turning out in large numbers to cast their ballots.
BJP Expresses Confidence in Outcome
Speaking during the counting process, Chakraborty expressed confidence in securing a decisive victory. He attributed the party’s strong performance to its focus on development initiatives and maintaining stability in the region.
According to him, voters responded positively to governance efforts and ongoing projects in both the constituency and the state. Party workers also remained optimistic, citing consistent leads across multiple rounds as a sign of broad support.
Awaiting Final Declaration
While the trends clearly favour the BJP candidate, the final result will be officially declared once all rounds of counting are completed. Election officials continue to oversee the process to ensure accuracy and transparency.
The Dharmanagar bypoll result is expected to carry political significance, as it reflects voter sentiment in the region following recent developments. The outcome may also influence future political strategies for the major parties in Tripura.
